Ceramic Vase with Bespoken Glaze by Makoto Yabe
By Makoto Yabe
Located in Atlanta, GA
Made by Japanese ceramic artist Makoto Yabe (1947-2005), this stoneware vase features a globular body supported by a round pedestal foot. A similarly shaped neck extends to a rimmed mouth opening. Robust in form with thick wall, the vase is noted for its irregular cloved form. The surface is covered in a beige-yellow glaze, on top of which, dark brown strokes and thick white feldspar slip were artistically applied in a splashed and washed pattern. Together with some random shallow incision lines, they form an abstract painting with textured surface where some slip forms small droplets at the end of the stroke. The work was created in traditional Japanese manner and reflects the beauty of Wabi Sabi, a Zen aesthetic for the imperfect perfection. The base was incised with the artist's cipher. "Makoto Yabe's work beautifully exemplifies the transmission of Japanese ceramics to the West. Born in Fukushima, Japan, Yabe began studying ceramics in Kyoto at the age of nine. He completed his training at the age of 24, with a four-year apprenticeship under Jinmatsu Uno and Sango Uno. Yabe then came to Boston, where he was an integral member of the local ceramic community, yet he maintained his Japanese roots. As an instructor of ceramics, Yabe worked in the Boston area at numerous schools and universities, touching the lives of all his students and expanding their knowledge and appreciation of studio ceramics." Biography sited from Pucker Gallery...

Modernist Geometric Acrylic Lucite Bowl Barware Server, circa 1970
By General Decoration
Located in Atlanta, GA
This sophisticated Mid-Century modernist Lucite or acrylic barware bowl, tray, or serving dish was crafted by Grainware circa 1970. The serving centerpiece boasts a geometric shape, three carved containers for snacks, olives, nuts, or vegetables, and a tall and sturdy handle. The acrylic is luxuriously weighty and transparent, similar to genuine crystal. There is no visible designer's mark. The serving barware tool is in excellent condition, with no pronounced signs of wear. Dimensions: 11.50 in wide (29 cm) x 10 in deep (25.5 cm) x 8 in high (20.5 cm). Note: Otto Röhm, a German chemist, invented acrylic in 1902. However, its mass production did not begin until 1933, when Röhm GmbH (currently Evonik Degussa GmbH) began marketing it under the Plexiglas® brand. Also known as ACRYLITE®, Lucite®, and Perspex®, acrylic is noted for its unparalleled transparency among polymers. It is also BPA-free and a food-grade material commonly used for outdoor tableware. Not long after Plexiglas became available, Plastic Productions Company of Redwood City, CA, began manufacturing housewares using acrylic sheets. These products were primarily black or gray. As a result, they were initially marketed under the Gray n Ware brand, which was later changed to Grainware. Charles McCrea, who owned the Plastic Productions Company, was also its chief product designer. In June 1951, the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) acquired several Grainware products, which remain on display today. In 1971, SiLite Inc. acquired the Plastic Productions Company, a housewares and giftware manufacturer based in Chicago, Illinois. Under its president, Robert Parmacek, SiLite introduced new products made using transparent acrylic sheets under the Grainware brand, which were wildly successful. Consequently, Grainware became known as a brand of predominantly clear acrylic products. The next transformation of the Grainware brand came in the late 1970s when Mr. Parmacek changed the production process from vacuum-forming acrylic sheets to injection molding acrylic resins. This technique enabled Grainware to mass-produce intricate designs, cementing its reputation as a high-end brand of unique giftware and housewares. In 1991, Carlisle Companies Inc. acquired SiLite Inc. and the Grainware brand, but Jolly Tone remained the primary manufacturer of Grainware products. In 2012, Jolly Tone bought the Grainware brand in partnership with William Bounds...
