Shaker Interior, Sabbathday Lake, Maine Silver print, selenium toned, 1971 Signed in pencil lower right (see photo) Titled verso (see photo) Printed c. 1971 Condition: Excellent Image: 6 1/2 x 9 3/8 inches Frame: 14 x 17 inches Original Kulicke welded frame George A. Tice, born in Newark, New Jersey, United States, October 13, 1938, the son of a college-educated New Jerseyan, William S. Tice, and Margaret Robertson, a Traveller of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh stock with a fourth-grade education. George was raised by his mother, maintaining regular visiting contact with his father, whose influence and advice he valued highly. Education His first contact with photography was in the albums of family photographs belonging to his father, and this gave him the desire to create images of his own. George Tice began with a Kodak Brownie. In 1953, having bought a Kodak Pony, which gave him some control over exposure and focus, and a Kodak developing kit, he began to advance his craft. George Tice also joined the Carteret Camera Club. Tice's photographs of homeless men on the Bowery won second place in the black and white print competitions. George Tice decided at this point to make photography his career. In 1955 George Tice attended the Newark Vocational and Technical High School, where he briefly studied commercial photography under Harve Wobbe. When he turned sixteen, he quit school and took a job as a darkroom assistant for Classic Photo, a portrait studio in Newark. He also worked as a stock boy at Kreske's Department Store in Newark, then as an office boy in the circulation department of the Newark Evening News. In 1956 George Tice enlisted in the United States Navy, in which he rose to the rank of Photographer's Mate Third Class. After boot camp and two years at Naval Air Station Memphis, he was transferred to sea duty aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Wasp...

ABOUT: In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience. As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way. This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat reclining in the pool with a drink. The black and white image evokes an extreme sense of nostalgia in its cinematic portraiture and supple texture. Though the figure of the woman is tauntingly beautiful, the drink is the darkest tone, nearing black, and is centered in the frame. With this, we are reminded of the refreshing notes of summer and the utter serenity of taking the day off to relax. The show’s imagery is evocative of all eras of summer, thus any viewer can relate or connect to one of the images. As Rice likes to say, “There’s something for everyone.” One image by Benjamin Heller details a strong owl flying...

"Leading Horse", Kansas City, 1997
By Pete Kelly
Located in Hudson, NY
This will be shipped direct from the artist to you or your framer. In this photograph a silhouetted horse follows a silhouetted figure closely as they trek through a field. The use of abstracted figures helps emphasize the emotional aspect of Kelly's main theme: the bond between humans and animals. Pete Kelly finds his inspiration in nature and the landscape. Specifically focusing on, "The reclamation by nature of urban settings", Kelly finds a particularly strong aesthetic and power in the beauty of the urban landscape. "I try to see beauty around me, drawing beauty from ugliness by capturing close up textures of fading paint or graffiti, or by reducing the shape of the subject to silhouette." Kelly's fascination with photography, the quality, and flexibility of the medium began at a very early age. Born in England in 1966, and as the son of a military man, Kelly spent most of his childhood growing up in West Germany. After leaving school Kelly enrolled in a photography course with the R. A. F Photographic Unit, based in Wildenrath in Germany. Although this initial training lasted only six months, it established a life long passion and dedication to photography. Already an avid traveller, Kelly initially decided to return to the UK,
to study Graphic Design at Stockport College, before moving to America in 1987. After completing an Internship at an innovative commercial photography studio in America,
Kelly began working as a Photographers Assistant. Working closely with a range of photographers allowed him to intrinsically develop his own
refined sense of aesthetic as well as develop and master photographic theory and technique. Now working as a Fine Art Photographer in his own right,
Pete Kelly utilizes the most cutting edge equipment and techniques,
painting with photography by compositing and layering photographs...

No. 365 Yellow Avens
By Edwin Hale Lincoln
Located in Fairlawn, OH
No. 365 Yellow Avens From: Wild Flowers of New England, 1914, 6 volumes Volume II, Plate 86 Platinum print, mounted on presentation mount, 1914 Unsigned, as issued Condition: Excellent Image size: 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches Mount size: 15 x 13 inches Edwin Hale Lincoln (1848-1938) was an award winning photographer at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. He took his photographs with a box camera and developed his negatives using the platinum printing process, one of the most durable and beautiful processes available. He began his career shooting nautical and architectural images, but his true passion was flora in nature. Lincoln’s work was especially important to two early 20th-century movements--the Arts and Crafts movement to preserve wild flowers and wild gardens in America and the movement to include photography in the fine arts. Courtesy Digital Commonwealth Approved biography for Edwin Hale Lincoln (Courtesy of Christian Peterson) Naturalistic photographer Edwin Hale Lincoln is known for his extensive series of flower images. Between 1904 and 1914, he self-published Wild Flowers of New England, eight volumes (issued both loose and bound) of four hundred original platinum prints. Lincoln was born on January 2, 1848, in Westminster, Massachusetts, the son of a Unitarian minister. At fourteen years of age he served as a drummer boy in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He started his photographic career in 1876, as a salesman and partner in a photographic business in Brockton, Massachusetts. In 1883, he began photographing Berkshire estates for their wealthy owners and wooden yachts sailing at Newport, Rhode Island. Before the turn of the twentieth century, he was involved with both amateur and professional organizations. He joined the Society of Amateur Photographers of New York and in 1885 showed work in the annual exhibition of the Boston Society of Amateur Photographers. His work was included in shows at the annual conventions of the Photographers’ Association of America in 1886 (St. Louis) and 1890 (Washington, D.C.). In 1892, his photographs were seen in the Fifth Annual Joint Exhibition, organized by the leading camera clubs of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. In 1893, Lincoln moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where he commenced his interest in wildflowers. A sensitive naturalist, he was always careful not to destroy his subjects or their habitat. Though he dug up the flowers he photographed, he lovingly nurtured them while in his care and returned them to their natural setting when done. He preferred working in his home studio, where he used an 8-x-10-inch camera and could more easily control the light. All of his photographs are contact prints made directly from his large-format negatives. To support himself and his family, Lincoln sold his finished portfolios and books largely to institutional collections. From 1902 to 1921, he also worked as the resident caretaker on a wealthy estate in Pittsfield. He may also have garnered fees for reproductions of his work, when they illustrated four 1915 articles in Craftsman, the leading magazine of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1931, Lincoln issued his last set of photographs...
