Item Ships From: South Korea
Annamese stoneware with cobalt underglaze blue, Hoi An Hoard, late 15th century.
Located in seoul, KR
The vase features a slender neck adorned with gracefully drawn, elongated leaves that blend seamlessly with its natural curves, adding a refined elegance. At the center, a meticulously rendered geometric pattern of repeating wave-like motifs creates a sense of depth and movement, framed by curved lines for balance. Simple plant motifs are scattered throughout, complementing the design with minimal strokes. The base is grounded by repeated geometric symbols, ensuring stability and cohesion. Overall, the vase masterfully combines simplicity and sophistication, resulting in a harmonious and elegant work of art. Dates : 15th century Le Dynasty Region : North Annam, Vietnam Type : Yuhuchun Vase Found/Acquired : Southeast Asia , South China Sea, Hoi An Ship Reference : 1) Art Gallery of Greater Victoria - A vase from the wreck of the Hoi An 2) Butterfield Treasures Hoi An Hoard Auction Catalogs / San Francisco Butterfields 2000 * Vietnamese trade ceramics Around the mid-14th century, Vietnam developed its ceramics production technology by producing blue and white porcelain, and began to export it overseas. During this period, China Ming Dynasty implemented a policy of lifting the ban from 1371 to 1657 and restricted foreign trade. This served as a good opportunity in the trade history of Vietnamese ceramics, and ceramic exports...

Annamese blue and white bowl, circa 15th century.
Located in seoul, KR
The bowl's design features fluid, dynamic brushstrokes typical of Annamese pottery, where cobalt blue underglaze was used to create intricate patterns before a clear glaze was applied. The artwork, with its foliage and floral motifs, suggests a connection to the natural world—a common theme in Vietnamese art. Such items were highly traded, and their recovery from shipwrecks helps us understand the extent of maritime commerce in Southeast Asia during the 15th and 16th centuries. This piece embodies the craftsmanship and aesthetic values of the period, providing insights into the cultural and economic contexts of its time. Dates : 15th century Le Dynasty Region : North Annam, Vietnam Type : Dish Found/Acquired : Southeast Asia , South China Sea, Hoi An Ship Diameter : 17cm Reference : Double checked with reference to the original catalogue Butterfield Treasures Hoi An Hoard Auction Catalogs / San Francisco Butterfields 2000 * Vietnamese trade ceramics Around the mid-14th century, Vietnam developed its ceramics production technology by producing blue and white porcelain, and began to export it overseas. Apsara Carved Limestone Stele with Extremely Rare 'Oolitic silica', Wei Dynasty
Located in seoul, KR
The small dots apparent on the surface of this stone stele are indicative of an oolitic silica structure or oolites formed in what is known as "Oolitic chert." The same phenomenon can also be observed in the Tang Dynasty Limestone Stele at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. This formation occurs gradually over the course of thousands to several hundred thousand years within the soil or sea. Similar structures are commonly found in ancient fossils or arrowheads. Ancient peoples chose certain types of stones for tool-making, preferring materials that were easier to work with and could be sharpened effectively. This predilection is believed to be the reason why oolitic silica structures are frequently found in ancient arrowheads. The development of these oolitic silica structures is a very slow process involving the accumulation of siliceous layers around particulates. This phenomenon, where silica reacts with water to form layers around a nucleus, occurs under specific chemical and physical conditions. Typically, it takes thousands to hundreds of thousands of years for silica to gradually accumulate in layers through contact with moisture, a process that requires a precise harmony of many variables, including chemical conditions, temperature, pressure, pH, and biological activity. It is known that no other stele with such a silica structure has been identified to date, serving not only as evidence of its authenticity but also significantly enhancing the rarity of this piece. This stele appears to be a stone sculpture of an apsara, a celestial nymph from Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Despite its fragmentary state, the sculpture conveys grace and movement. The apsara is captured in a dynamic pose, perhaps once part of a larger tableau, playing a flute-like instrument. The black stand was made in Hong Kong at the time of the acquisition. Date : Northern Wei/Eastern Wei Dynasty(386~550) Size : 22cm (Height) x 16cm(diameter) Condition : Good (oolites dots on surface) Provenance : Acquired in late 1990s from Hongkong Reference : 1) Sotheby's New York 20 March 2018 - Jingyatang Treasures Of Chinese Buddhist...

Blue and White Saucer, Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Era, Circa 1690
Located in seoul, KR
It features a complex design with a central circular motif surrounded by eight petal-like sections, each intricately adorned with various botanical and geometric patterns, creating a symmetrical arrangement. The number 8 in Chinese culture is associated with prosperity and is considered very auspicious. This may reflect the traditional Chinese cosmological concept of the "Bagua," which are eight trigrams used in Taoist philosophy to represent fundamental principles of reality, seen in various aspects of Chinese culture, including the I Ching and Feng Shui. The central circle with radiating petals is also a representation of perfect geometric harmony, reflecting the balance and unity which are key elements in Chinese aesthetics. The use of symmetry and balance is seen as a way to represent the harmony of the universe. Located in seoul, KR
At the center, it features five elegant cranes depicted against a pond setting, each portrayed in varying postures. The background harmoniously incorporates lotus flowers and other aquatic plants.
