While Knorr’s images take some of their inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, there is another almost subconscious strain to her work. Going back to the time of cave painting we see that these early visual artists not only recorded their lives and surroundings, but used art to express themselves. The depiction of animals in symbolic and powerful ways and the urge to create these images with the best tools at hand is a line stretching from these unnamed cave painters to Karen Knorr.

Artist Biography
Krantz occupies a unique place in the history of contemporary art for his imagery blending western landscape photography with the figure of the cowboy as depicted and romanticized in American popular culture. The technical underpinning of his work was established when he studied with Ansel Adams and Paul Caponigro, but perhaps more importantly, Krantz’s work reflects a dictum that he learned from Adams: “Technical proficiency leads to artistic freedom.” His range and versatility are his forte, working with ease in demanding and ever-changing conditions.
If Krantz’s work looks familiar, it is not surprising. Krantz, had been documenting the cinematic vistas of the American West for 20 years on commercial assignments and these much published images caught the eye of appropriation artist, Richard Prince, known for re-photographing advertisements and presenting the resulting images in a new “conceptual” context. Prince’s most famous series is his large scale reproductions of the cowboy images from Marlboro ads, and in something of an ironic compliment, when Prince had his mid-career retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum not only were Krantz’s re-photographed images included in the exhibit but the image on all the banners flying along 5th Avenue was also one of Krantz’s. 'Illuminations started in 2002 when a relationship was slowly falling apart. While trying to save it, we rented a large stylish apartment in Stockholm, and then later one in Arles, France, hoping that a change of scene would have a posi-tive effect. The new spaces made the distance between us more acute, and the inevitable break even more obvious. The ritual of making one photograph each night became crucial to me. I left the camera shutter open for 3 to 8 hours in a darkened bedroom, and as the morning light arrived I interrupted the exposure. This photograph depicts the time ravaged corridor of the abandoned Wayne Hills Mall, in Wayne, New Jersey. A waterlogged hallway leads from the crumbling atrium to the empty storefront shell of Art World, with its sign still intact on the upper wall of the shop. Phillip Buehler captures the last stages of the life of the once bustling mall, with the empty corridors and dilapidated storefronts and kiosks.
This photograph is a featured in a solo exhibition of Phillip Buehler's photographs, entitled: “Mallrat to Snapchat: The End of the Third Place.”
Front Room Gallery is proud to present “Mallrat to Snapchat: The End of the Third Place,” on view November 29th - January 12th. January recent work by photographer Phillip Buehler documenting the death of the Wayne Hills Mall in Wayne, New Jersey. This is Buehler’s second solo show at Front Room Gallery.
Buehler’s exhibition is part photography, part installation, part cultural critique, mixed in with nostalgia and genuine affection for this very American economical and sociological experiment— The Mall. Buehler takes a very intimate look at the beginning, and possibly ending, of mall culture in the United States featuring not only photographs, but also artifacts from the mall and its opening year, 1973. Under a photograph of a desolate Sam Goody will be a bin filled with almost 100 albums from that year, that visitors can flip through and play in the gallery on a vintage record player.
