Korean Medicine Chest with Drawers Yakchang
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Korean medicine or apothecary chest with curved leg support circa the first quarter of the 20th century. Known as Yakchang in Korea, the chest was used to sort and store herb medicines in its many small drawers. The prototype was originated in China, but this piece is distinctively Korean because of the classic style of the brass hardware. the configuration of the storage space in the lower part, the shape of the leg support and the wood paneling details. The upper part features thirty-six drawers with divided in six rows, each with a brass pull ring and two herb names in Hanja, carved and gilt. The lower part has a bi-door panels open to a storage compartment, which is flanked by four more drawers. Closer examination of the construction reveals that the frame and the drawers were made from Paulownia wood, which has an insect-repelling quality. The frame was painted and lacquered dark while the drawers remained natural. The front panels of the drawers and the doors were all made from Zelkova wood, showcasing its lovely linear dark grains. The interiors of the drawers are very clean and free of odor (have not been extensively used to store medicine). To compare with another Medicine Chest, see illustration on page 47 in "Korean Antique Furniture...

Chinese Reverse Glass Painting of Taoist Immortals, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Popularized during the Qing dynasty, reverse glass painting requires an artist to essentially work backwards, starting with details and shading before adding color and form. Lending the finished work a subtle three-dimensional effect, this exacting technique doesn't allow for any corrections, and is only revealed to its full effect when the glass pane is turned around. This example dates to the late 19th century and depicts the Taoist immortals He Xiangu and Cao Guojiu. Said to have attained immortality through their studies of the natural world, the Eight Immortals each represent a different condition in life and impart blessings of prosperity and longevity. The charming scene is likely one of a set of...

Hand Carved Indian Temple Carving Statue from Gujarat Depicting Mother and Child
Located in Yonkers, NY
An Indian early 20th century hand carved architectural temple carving from Gujarat, depicting a mother and her child with nicely weathered patina. Crafted in the Western portion of India, in the culturally rich state of Gujarat, this early 20th-century hand-carved temple sculpture captures the tender bond between a mother and her child. The mother, adorned with a delicate headdress and detailed clothing and jewelry, stands in a dignified, frontal position. Her small child, clinging affectionately to her flank and grasping her dress, turns his head back towards us, a big smile illuminating his face. This heartwarming scene is beautifully rendered with a keen attention to detail, showcasing the artisan's skill and devotion. The sculpture's nicely weathered patina, along with traces of polychrome, lends it an air of antiquity and authenticity. The piece's unfinished back hints at its original architectural context, meant to be viewed from the front as it adorned a sacred space. Ideal for a variety of settings, this temple carving will enliven any wall, bringing a touch of historical and cultural depth to your home. Its charming depiction of maternal love, combined with its rich textures and colors, makes it a captivating focal point. Whether displayed in a living room, hallway, or study, this early 20th-century Indian temple carving...

1960 Big Boys, Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, Japan
By Tomio Kinoshita
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Tomio Kinoshita (1923 – 2014) Big Boys, 1960 Woodblock print Image size: 32.75 high by 22 inches wide (83 by 56 cm) Paper size: 35.5 high by 23.75 inches wide (90 by 60.3 cm) Signed: in pencil lower right, Tomio Kinoshita Titled: in pencil at lower left Edition: 30/50 Condition: Very good The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images. One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...
