Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's encaustic Painting of Nothing #53 is made of ceramic raw materials, dry pigment and wax. This piece is part of his ongoing Painting of Nothing Series. Hirsch applies the waxy mix with a brush onto redwood plywood backed structures with two-inch wood strips all around and used various torches to layer, flux, bubble and blend. "Waxy and very tactile, they are probably the work Mark Rothko would have done had he spent most of his life in clay. Hirsch’s paintings have the nuance, subtle texture, and color shifts that become evident in blown-up photographs of his ceramic objects as well as a similar presence." Richard Hirsch brief bio:
In the field of contemporary ceramic, Rick Hirsch has earned an international reputation. He has achieved this recognition by engaging in numerous diversified professional activities. Through efforts in university teaching, exhibits, writing, lecturing and researching he has risen to worldwide prominence.
In 1975, Hirsch co-authored a book entitled Raku, published by Watson-Guptill. This was the first comprehensive text to address the new innovations developing in the west that were transforming traditional Japanese Raku. Also, in the same year, Hirsch became a founding faculty member of The Program in Artistry at Boston University. Currently, Hirsch is a Professor Emeritus at The School for American Crafts which is a part of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. His university teaching career now spans well over four decades.
Repeatedly, Hirsch has participated in several milestone exhibitions and publications. Significant shows include; The Evolution of American Art in Craft Media Since 1945; Echoes: Historical References in Contemporary Ceramics; American Ceramics Now; Raku: Origins, Impact and Contemporary Expression; and Convergences: The Presence of the Past in Contemporary American Ceramics...

A framed photograph by Chinese American photographer Don Hong-Oai (1929-2004) "The Intimate Shadow", a composed landscape photograph taken in Quilin, the world-famous scenic area in China. Signed with title, inscription of location and dated on the top -left, red sealed on the lower right corner and signed and dated 1982 lower left on the mat. The photograph depicts an idyllic scenery on Li-river with the karst peak in the misty background, where a fishing boat floats. The work was created with dark room manipulation to echo the traditional chines ink painting that showcase a surreal ambience. The photograph is housed in the original artist's archive metal frame with an old print of the artist's bio and copyright mark on the back. It was purchased directly from the artist's studio. Don Hong-Oai was born in Canton, China but raised and educated in Saigon, Vietnam. At age 13 he began an apprenticeship at a Chinese photo and portrait shop. In 1979 he immigrated to the United States and settled in the Chinatown of San Francisco.
Don began making a living by selling his landscape photographs in front of Macy’s and began to receive recognition for his craftsmanship. His style was heavily influenced by the legendary photographer Long Chin-San and his technique of layering negatives for ideal composition, by taking three negatives, foreground, middle ground, and far ground, and selecting a subject from each negative. The photographs of Don Hong-Oai are made in a unique style, which can be considered Asian pictorialism. This method of adapting a Western art for Eastern purposes probably originated in the 1940s in Hong Kong. One of its best-known practitioners was the great master Long Chin-San (who died in the 1990s at the age of 104) with whom Don Hong-Oai studied. With the delicate beauty and traditional motifs of Chinese painting (birds, boats, mountains, etc.) in mind, photographers of this school used more than one negative to create a beautiful picture, often using visual allegories. Inspired by slot-car racetracks, each painting depicts a meandering, yet cyclical path that twists and turns upon itself in an endless loop. Isolated from time and place, the painting achieves a sense of timelessness and draws a through line linking the past, the present, and the future.
Entitled "Superior," this track painting is one of five compositions inspired by the Great Lakes. Like all of Fitzgerald's works, the paintings are deeply responsive to his surroundings and encapsulate the unique industrial histories and geologic wonders of the American midwest. Fitzgerald describes his Great Lakes series as "a contemplation of these wondrous bodies of water that have impressed and mystified me beyond words since childhood. My desire within each work is to create the timeless quality of a relic imbued with nostalgia and emotive power."
The focal point of "Superior" is a meandering loop of thin, colorful stripes, contrasted by a dark blue-black field that recalls the deep waters of Lake Superior. Like beams of light cutting through darkness, the rainbow track twists and turns to fill the surface, surrounded by round forms reminiscent of floating air bubbles. At once bright and colorful yet dark and mysterious, "Superior" evokes the sensation of being underwater, painted to resemble "a track that is submerged or beneath a surface, but illuminated and glowing." Contemporary artist Bonnie Edelman's "Black Sand Beach, Iceland" was photographed in 2017 and is part of the Sea Scapes Series. As her most recognized collection "Scapes" consists of landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes whose specific forms have been blurred in order to direct viewers’ focus toward colors and compositions. Sublime and abstract, the photographs capture grain fields, sea horizons, and sunsets from around the world. This photograph is being offered as a C-print face-mounted onto 1/8” non glare plexi with a custom maple floating frame (1/2" face x 2" deep with 3/8" gap). It will ship directly from the artist's printmaking studio with a signed certificate of authenticity.
About the artist:
Bonnie Edelman was born in New York City. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College on an academic and athletic scholarship. Having been raised in a family of artists and architects, Bonnie was always creating. Whether it was sculpture, painting, jewelry making and interior design, she has always had an intense need to express herself through creativity. Fashion was an all encompassing self expression so it was because of this idea of materializing thoughts, desires and inspirations that she decided to devote her career to the editorial side of the fashion industry.
After an internship at Rolling Stone Magazine and then formally starting her career as the assistant to the Fashion Director at Seventeen Magazine, Bonnie moved through the ranks at Glamour Magazine and MTV. She then settled into the position of Travel Editor at Sports Illustrated, where she navigated the world producing exotic and inspiring photo shoots for the magazine’s annual Swimsuit Issue. It was during this time spent in The Islands of the Maldives, Ecuador, Venezuela and Kenya, to mention a few, while working closely with photographers like Sante D’Orazio, Russell James...
