Signed on the reverse Alexei Harlamoff. Alexei Harlamoff was born in the village of Dyachevka near Saratov on the Volga. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, and he won both a Gold Medal and a scholarship in 1868. The scholarship enabled him to travel to Paris, where he studied under portrait painter Léon Bonnat, and by 1874 he was visited by Russian marine painter Alexei Bogoliubov, who reported back to Russia on the young artist’s visible success. A large bronze bust showing a beautiful young woman depicted as a Bacchante, the Greek Goddess of Wine, her head festooned with grape branches. The bust is supported by an integral bronze plinth that at the back is inscribed with the name of the sculptor, J. Clesinger Rome 1857 dating the bronze to the time when the sculptor was 33 years old. The sculptor whose full name was Jean Auguste Baptiste Clesinger was born in 1813 in Besancon in Southern France. His father, Georges-Philippe, was a sculptor and trained Auguste in art. Auguste first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1843 with a bust of Vicomte Jules de Vaidahon. At the 1847 Salon, he created a sensation with his Woman bitten by a serpent, produced from life-casts from his model Apollonie Sabartier who was a notorious Parisian and the mistress of many perhaps even of Clesinger himself. While unstamped, this set comes with written documentation and attribution to George Jacob by a leading antique dealer in Paris from where they were purchased. Georges Jacob (6 July 1739 – 5 July 1814) the most prominent furniture maker in 18th century Paris. He produced carved, painted and gilded beds and seat furniture and upholstery work for the French royal châteaux, in the Neoclassical style that is associated with Louis XVI furniture. In his workshop he employed numerous specialist carvers and gilders. In 1785, Jacob produced the first mahogany chairs à l'anglaise, for the Comte de Provence similar in many ways to the ones on offer here. When he retired in 1796, Georges Jacob left his workshop in the hands of his two sons, one of whom was François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter who went on to become a leading French Empire Furniture...

French Sevres Bisque Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Candelabra Lamp Signed Feuchere

A beautifully cast French Serves bisque porcelain grouping showing two classically draped maidens or Graces standing on a circular bisque base with flutes and inset with decorative flames, on a further bisque base decorated with grapes and palmettes, the whole on a circular gilded bronze base resting on three tupie feet. Between the heads of the maidens there is a decorative gilded shaft which supports the 'new' top electrics as well as three curved gilded candle arms and nozzles. Incised on the top and back of the bisque base is the Sevres stamp with a number 2 between the interlaced L's. There is also the original sculptor's name J. J Feuchere for Jean Jacques Feuchere ( 1805 - 1852) etched on the base under the Graces...
