French Empire Gilt Bronze Allegorical Clock of the Astronomical Sciences

About the Item

A fine example of a period French Empire mantle clock in finely chased and gilded bronze made in France in the first quarter of the 19thC. One of the Greek muses with a star atop her head is shown standing on the base of the clock to the right of the plinth and she has many scientific instruments all around her including calipers, globes, measuring sticks, etc. The plinth which houses the movement is completely decorated with roses and a library of books along the bottom. The actual base of the clock is completely decorated with a frieze depicting further draped classical figures studying their scientific instruments. The clock has it's original silk string suspension movement and rings the hours and halfs on a bell. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Muses are the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts. They were considered the source of the knowledge embodied in the poetry, lyric songs, and myths that were related orally for centuries in ancient Greek culture.
