Large Herbert Krenchel Designed Danish Modern Krenit Baby Blue and Black Bowl
By Herbert Krenchel, Krenit
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage Herbert Krenchel (Herbert Krenchel graduated with a Master of Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark. Herbert Krenchel’s research was focused on materials and fiber reinforcement. Since the 1950’s, simultaneously with his research, Herbert Krenchel has worked with design.) designed enamel bowl for Krenit from the 1970's. With a baby blue. powder blue (dare I say Tiffany blue) interior and a matte black exterior, this gorgeous piece of design exhibits restraint and exuberance concurrently. I wanted to learn more about Mr. Krenchel (I'm hoping you do too) so I'd like to offer this bio from the Norman Copenhagen...

Antique Chinese Porcelain Blue De Hue Zhadou Slop Jar Spittoon, 19 Century
Located in Amsterdam, Noord Holland
Superb antique Chinese porcelain zhadou. Blue de Hue porcelain for the Vietnamese market. Decorated with butterflies, flowers and bats. The porcelain is almost like soft paste from the Qianlong period.
Such small 'zhadou' were used as table-top slops jars rather than as floor spittoons. When making tea, the Chinese first rinse the cups and teapot in boiling water to cleanse and warm them. Such water would be jettisoned into a 'zhadou' along with tea dregs and other waste.
Blue de hue porcelain
From the 1700s onwards, kings of the Le-Trinh dynasty in Vietnam ordered porcelain from China for their court. This type is named after Hue, the 19th-century capital of the last royal dynasty in Vietnam, the Nguyen dynasty...

Dame Lucie Rie, 1950's Porcelain Footed Bowl with Manganese Glaze.
By Lucie Rie
Located in London, GB
This is a great example of a Lucie Rie iconic hand-thrown, footed bowl with manganese glaze.
It is thinly potted and slightly pulled into an ovoid shape with an undulating rim.
The running glaze is subtle whilst adding an individual element to the decoration of the bowl.
The bowl bears the artist's monogram seal mark under.
Lucie Rie was an Austrian-born British ceramics artist. Rie’s works, usually consisting of hand-thrown pots, bottles, and bowl forms, are noteworthy for their Modernist forms.
Born in 1902 in Vienna, Austria, she studied pottery at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, a school of arts and crafts. In 1937, she won a silver medal at the Paris International Exhibition and by the following year, Rie moved to London to flee Nazi Austria.
Once settled in the British capital, she maintained a small studio and continued to produce pottery and small clay objects, including ceramic buttons and jewellery which she sold to support herself.
She was later joined by Hans Coper, a young artist who soon became a partner in her studio. She taught at the Camberwell School of Art from 1960...
