Mid-Century French Decorative Platter by Albert Thiry (circa 1970s)
About the Item
Mid-century decorative platter (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry. A large sunflower springs to mind looking at the platter. Both visually stunning and tactile at the same time, the deeply engraved motif with its various patterns bring the whole together. Albert Thiry's trademark colours - forest green, dark brown and chalk white - and designs appear in the concentric circles. Rustic yet beautiful, the lip of the platter creates a visual outline of the piece. The underside base is an unglazed, earthy clay brown where the signature normally appears, however, in this case it seems to have been blotted out in production. The platter is delightfully Provencal with a touch of whimsy and is certainly trademark Thiry. This is the essence of its charm. Thiry's creations continue to delight even as they increase in age. In good overall condition. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video will be provided.
About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
