About the Item

Large mid-century decorative platter (circa 1970s) by Albert Thiry. A creamy-white glaze with touches of blue-grey provides the background for a colourful thistle motif in the centre recess. The rim assumes the colour of the flowers' foliage, some parts lighter than others. The incised motif in the centre has depth and is wonderfully tactile. The markings and colouring are quintessential Albert Thiry. A stunning centre piece in a delightful Provençal style. In good overall condition. Signed: 'Thiry' on earthy clay underside of dish. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of this piece will be provided. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian. Dimensions: H 6 cm / 2.4" W 34.5 cm / 13.6" D 45 cm / 17.7".
