A lyrical, American modernist view of a young woman shown seated in an interior, gazing towards the viewer with her chin resting pensively on her hand.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, this California painter and printmaker moved to Los Angeles in 1933. Jerry Opper graduated from Hollywood High School and worked as a set painter in the movie industry while studying art at the Chouinard Institute. During the war, he was stationed in Colorado where he enrolled in the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. After the war, he returned to Los Angeles where he worked again in the film industry. In 1947, he moved to San Francisco where he studied full-time at the California School of Fine Arts and was awarded his diploma in June of 1950.
Opper exhibited widely and with success including at the Drawing and Print Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association in 1950 and again in 1951 when he was awarded the Artists' Council Prize. His work was included in the International Biennial of Contemporary Color Lithography at the Cincinnati Art...

An influential critic, writer and teacher, Philip Leslie Hale was an American Impressionist with an experimental, avant-garde approach to painting. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of author Edward Everett Hale and the younger brother of artist Ellen Day Hale, Philip was raised in a lively intellectual atmosphere. He probably received his first artistic training from his paternal aunt Susan Hale, after which he entered the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School under Edmund Tarbell, an American Impressionist painter who greatly influenced Hale’s style. A year later in 1884, the young artist moved to New York City, where he enrolled at the Art Students League and studied under Kenyon Cox and J. Alden Weir. There, his fellow students included Theodore Butler and William Howard “Peggy” Hart.
In 1887, Hale traveled to Paris with Theodore Butler and Susan Hale, where he furthered his artistic training at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian. During this first year, he studied with Jules-Joseph Lefebvre, Gustave Boulanger and Henri Lucien Doucet...

Robert Frederick Vorreyer (August 25, 1924 - January 27, 2016) was truly a master of graphic media. The power and dynamics of Robert's graphics are in the use of negative space in the skillful rendering of the human form. Handled with great sensitivity and dignity, the figures seem to be alive with a sharpness that challenges the eye of the beholder. Robert was born in Downers Grove, a suburb of Chicago, IL and graduated from the Downers Grove High School with and art scholarship to an accredited college. He attended the University of Illinois, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, the Royal Academy in London as well as studying independently with various artists. Robert was a World War II special service artist in Camp Robinson, AR and eventually became the art director for TLVA Infantry/Airborne School in Fort Benning...
