Founder of The School of Representational Art in Chicago, IL, Surdo is a lecturer and educator who believes in nurturing others.

"Birch, " Oil Paint on Olive Board
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Depicting trees from personal encounters, Surdo’s latest body of work entitled “Tree Spirits” takes us on a foray into the forest, where leaves, branches and burls express something deeply personal. Applying his mastery of figurative realism to the natural world, he experiments with form and texture to uncover the intangible spirits of trees. Entitled “Birch,” this small-scale oil painting depicts a young birch sapling against an olive wood board. Restricting the composition to only a portion of the trunk, Surdo focuses on qualities that make the tree memorable - its narrow trunk...

This charcoal drawing entitled “Fusion” beautifully illustrates the collision of two young birch trees. Loosely drawn with short, lateral strokes, the drawing depicts the slow process of two trees fusing together as a graceful gesture of physical touch. The horizontal motion of the sketch-like linework captures the striated texture of birch bark, punctuated by the irregular forms of its eye-shaped markings. The light-colored trees are contrasted by a dark backdrop, a void of negative that isolates the trees in space and time. Restricting the composition to only a portion of the tree trunks, Surdo accentuates their abstract forms and focuses on the simple beauty of their graceful movements. Guided by his memory, Surdo recalls the trees as soft, gentle and calm, leaning in on each other in a tender embrace. His freeform, expressive style reveals the subjectivity of this memory and finishes the composition with a transient, dream-like atmosphere. Charcoal on paper...

This charcoal drawing entitled “Memory of Leaves” beautifully illustrates the branching form of a mature birch tree. Loosely drawn with informal, sketch-like linework, the tree is shown in the middle of winter, bare of leaves and white with frost. Surdo’s skillful placement of shadow illustrates the forking branches with incredible texture and effortless realism. The intricate play of light and dark is accentuated by the stark white background, a negative space that isolates the tree in space and time. Restricting the composition to only a portion of the tree trunk, Surdo accentuates the tree’s abstract form, lingering on areas of unusual shape or texture. Seeking to convey the strong emotional response elicited by his initial encounter with the tree, Surdo focuses on the tree’s sculptural form, contrasting the strong trunk...

"Faith, " Charcoal on Paper, 2023

Entitled “Faith,” this small-scale charcoal drawing depicts a tree trunk carved with two deep cuts in the shape of a cross. The carving has healed over, assimilated into the bark as just another interesting detail. Up close, the work is loosely drawn with a heavy hand, but from afar, the natural scene still achieves a sense of realism. The tree trunk is conveyed through chaotic scribbling and aggressive strokes of light and dark charcoal, resulting in a pattern that simulates the rough texture of bark. Light falls softly on the tree, illuminating its form against the dark, atmospheric surroundings. The striking imagery of this work conveys the strong emotional response elicited by Surdo’s personal encounter with this tree. Restricting the composition to only the scarred portion of the tree trunk, Surdo focuses on symbolism of the cross carved into the tree’s side. The carving was inflicted upon the tree by an individual, whether as an act of graffiti or the object of adoration. Despite this wound, the tree persists and grows, adapting and changing until the mark is but another interesting detail. The tree’s spirit endures and speaks to the strength it takes to heal oneself, whether physically or mentally. Charcoal on paper...

Fallen Angel - Blond, Bare Chested Winged Male, Contemporary Oil Painting
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
Milton’s "Paradise Lost" has inspired generations of artists to depict the story of fallen angels. Surdo brings a unique and modern fire to the subject. A winged male with a perfect body is shown bare chested, his mane of hair snaps in the wind. His posture appears reposed, but each muscle is flexed with potential energy. Cast from heaven—this is the moment before he (aka Lucifer) rises again. The painting is framed in a substantial black wooden frame with a gold inset measuring 50.5 x 37.5 inches. Contaminating the Innocent - Young Girl Swimming Surrounded by Plastic Waste
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
"Contaminating the Innocent" is a bold statement on our society today. Plastics are everywhere and what they are doing to the environment is devastating. What they are doing to the next generation is even more catastrophic. Bruno plays with this idea by bringing this angelic child to the forefront of the issues at hand. We are drawn in by her innocence yet taunted by her surroundings. Bruno Surdo Contaminating the Innocent oil on canvas 48h x 48w in 121.92h x 121.92w cm BRS072 Bruno A. Surdo b. The Gangway of Justice, Woman Backed into a Corner, Life-Sized Charcoal on Paper
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
During the Capone era, dark and narrow passageways became escape routes for those evading the law or other gang members, thus the Chicago term “gangway” was born. Even the police were afraid to enter gangways alone. Bruno has taken that information and created this very provocative piece entitled "The Gangway of Justice" where we see a beautiful black woman...

Paradox of St. Sebastian - Contemporary Oil Painting with Graffiti and Shackles
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
This figure of St. Sebastian has long been a favorite subjects for artists. In this modern interpretation we see St. Sebastian shackled in chains and leather restraints against an industrial graffiti covered wall. He gazes upwards while his body is pummeled with rubber suction cup darts. Historical references are ripe for interpretation in this painting. St. Sebastian is known as the patron saint for athletes, soldiers and warriors. He is said to have survived his initial wounds from arrows by way of divine intervention only to be beaten to death later after warning the emperor of his sins. St. Sebastian is known to be a protector from plague. Bruno Surdo Paradox of St. Sebastian oil on canvas 60h x 36w in 152.40h x 91.44w cm Bruno A. Surdo b. Entanglement - Original Oil Painting of Intertwined Female Figures Floating
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
This dynamic and masterful painting of two intertwined figures floating in an open space is an excellent example of the artist's talent with the human figure. A textured impasto background surrounds the figures who float, eyes closed, in a fetal state. Bruno Surdo is one of few artists combine traditional figurative technique with a contemporary interpretation to great effect. Freedom - Original Oil Painting Showing Many Different Expressions of Womanhood
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
"Bruno Surdo is a throwback to the spiritual achievements of the artists from the flamboyant tradition of figure painting." -Ed Paschke "I continually seek to create expressive monolithic works that explore the human condition. This can be seen with some of my recent works that examine the human psyche, with an awareness to the Freudian and Jungian archetypes and transcendent barriers of human sexuality, while expressing my paradigm of civil and personal freedoms for independence." -Bruno Surdo Bruno A.
