Artist: Joyce Wieland
The Far Shore
By Joyce Wieland
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) was one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists of the 20th century. Emerging on the Toronto art scene in the early 1960s, throughout her career Wieland would explore the role of women, the body, nationalism, and intimacy using a variety of mediums. During much of the 1970s, Wieland was consumed by the creation (and recovery) of making her single feature film "The Far Shore". Her all-encompassing approach included writing the script, directing, co-producing, and trying to finance the project, a task that she notoriously despised. The film was loosely inspired by the life and death of the Canadian painter, Tom Thompson...

Joyce Wieland "Marie Antoinette"
By Joyce Wieland
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) is one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists. She achieved a level of commercial and critical success in her lifetime that was exceptional for a woman during an era in a male-dominated field. Notably, she was the first female artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery (Ottawa) in 1971 and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) in 1987. Although Wieland was an artist who was always drawing, she launched her career as a painter. Always experimenting, her art practice expanded to incorporate a range of media and materials, from textile works to film. In New York City, she was best known as an experimental filmmaker. In the mid 1960s Wieland began to embrace more representational and narrative elements in her work. Inspired by comic books, and her background in film as an animator, Wieland embraced figuration albeit clearly influenced by Pop Art. One of the reoccurring motifs in Wieland's oeuvre is playing with and subverting icons of femininity. In this work Wieland presents icons inspired by the French Queen Marie-Antoinette: a jewelry or hat box, a hairbrush, a medallion. The artist seems to be willing to give a make-over to the Queen. In the "nice medallion painting...

Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) was one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists of the 20th century. Emerging on the Toronto art scene at the beginning of the 1960s, over the course of her career Wieland explored the role of women, the body, nationalism, and intimacy using a variety of mediums. As well as drawing and painting, the artist utilized untraditional materials such as quilts and lipstick. Traditionally seen as feminine and craft-like, Wieland renegotiated the ‘low art’ or inherently misogynistic labels of these materials, engaging with feminist dialogue in subject matter and medium. Wieland was also committed to the figure, sketching and drawing quirky characters, even when the avant-garde was dedicated to abstraction. After a lengthy and often frustrating sejour in New York City, Wieland returned to Toronto. Her marriage to fellow Canadian artist, Michael Snow, had dissolved. During the 1970's Wieland was consumed by creating a feature-length film entitled "The Far Shore" about Tom...

The Sprinters, for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, with official COA
By John Baldessari
Located in New York, NY
John Baldessari The Sprinters, 1982 Limited Edition Offset Lithograph on Parson's Diploma paper Signed in graphite on the front. Accompanied by letter of authenticity from the publisher 36 x 24 inches Unframed Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the publisher on Olympic Committee letterhead. This is one of 750 hand signed lithographic posters, published in 1982 to celebrate the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics . Even though the signed edition is 750, the publisher is said to have sold fewer than 200 and destroyed the rest; hence signed editions of this print are far more scarce than the edition suggests. The Olympic Committee commissioned 15 nationally known artists, including to create unique designs to promote the event. This was John Baldessari's contribution to the portfolio - cleverly juxtaposing a modern day race, with ancient images, tying old and new and honoring the ancient Olympic tradition. In 2017, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne Switzerland...

Study for Crucifix - Original Drawing by A. Willette - End of 19th Century
Located in Roma, IT
Study for Crucifix is a splendid drawing in pastel realized by Adolphe Léon Willette, a French illustrator, painter, caricaturist, lithographer, and architect. The state of preservation is very good. The paper presents some fringes on the left margin. On the lower left, in pencil, there is the inscription, probably not coeval, “Willette”. The drawing represents an unusual iconography, in which the crucified Christ has his right hand nailed to the cross whilst his left hand is free, caressing the head of a female figure wearing a veil, presumably the Virgin Mary. The artist Adolphe Léon Willette, with his irreverent art...

Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) was one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists of the 20th century. Emerging on the Toronto art scene in the early 1960s, throughout her career Wieland explored the politicized role of women, the body, nationalism, and intimacy using a variety of mediums. Throughout her career, Wieland established new benchmarks for what was possible for a female artist to achieve. Among her accomplishments, Wieland was the first female artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery (Ottawa) in 1971. Her artistic practice was arguably most fruitful during the late 1960s / early 1970s during her last days in New York City, with then-husband Michael Snow, and return to Toronto. Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) is one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists. She achieved a level of commercial and critical success that was exceptional for a woman working in a male-dominated field. During her dynamic and influential career, Wieland established new benchmarks for what was possible for a female artist to achieve. Notably, she was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery (Ottawa) in 1971. Wieland has an important connection to pop art. As a commercial illustrator and animator, she was heavily influenced by comics, advertising and the depiction of everyday objects. While Wieland did explore abstraction, representational and narrative elements, as well as text, regularly appear in her work. This print, from the illustrious "Toronto Twenty Portfolio" possesses many of Wieland's signature motifs and themes: stylized sailboats, references to environmentalism, elements of text and the contrast between Canada and the United States. Furthermore, when this work is viewed in context with the other prints in the portfolio, by celebrated artists such as Michael Snow, Sorel Etrog and William Ronald...
