RICHARD WESTALL, RA (1765-1836) Cupid Sleeping; from a poem of Mrs Robinson - The Duchess of Devonshire Discovers the Sleeping Cupid Watercolour on paper, oval 36 by 44.5 cm., 14 ¼ by 18 in. (frame size 55 by 66 cm., 21 ¾ by 26 in.) Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1792, no.448. Richard Westall was bon in Reepham, near Norwich. Initially apprenticed to a London silver engraving he began studying at the Royal Academy Schools from 1785 and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1784 and 1836. Westall became an Associate member of the Royal Academy in 1792 and a full member in 1794. Westall painted in both oil and watercolour, his works being romantic and neoclassical in style. He contributing to both Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery and Fuseli’s Milton Gallery and was also a prolific book illustrator of both fiction and poetry including works by Sir Walter Scott and Byron, whose portrait he also painted. For a time he was also art master to the young Princess Victoria. This is probably Westall’s 1792 Royal Academy exhibit (no.448). The subject was inspired by the poem Cupid Sleeping by the poetess-actress Mary Darby Robinson, which had been published in the previous year. The poem was dedicated to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and the picture show the Duchess discovering the sleeping cupid who she then relieves of his bow and arrows. Mrs Robinson was not only the Duchess’s protégée but also the first public mistress of the Prince of Wales. William Nutter’s engraving of Westall’s picture was also dedicated to the Duchess of Devonshire. Christopher Ganz The Burial of Saint Lucy by Caravaggio 2016 colored pencil, pens, chalk, crayon 8.50h x 10.50w in 21.59h x 26.67w cm CG0017 -ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Jane Gray (b.1931) Stained Glass Design Watercolour 40.5 x 25 cm Signed, dated and studio stamp verso Provenance: the artist's studio sale The Church of St Andrew and St Mary in Pitminster was built on the site of an earlier Saxon church around 1300 and was later added to in the 15th century and restored in 1869 by the prolific English Gothic Revival architect, Sir Gilbert Scott. It is one of five watercolours in “black ivory” created by Maignan to illustrate the Polyeucte from Cornelius, a book specially published by Mame Editions (for which Maignan worked a lot) for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. These watercolours were exhibited in 1889 at the famous Galerie Georges Petit (which hosted the 11th exhibition of the French Water Color Society) under No. 124/125/126/127/128 (Maignan exposed another illustrative drawing for “Boileau” under No. 129). Each drawing illustrating an episode of all five acts of the tragedy. Our work represents the moment when Pauline (daughter of Felix, Roman senator and governor of the province of Armenia) regains his former suitor Severus (a noble Roman general) and explains that she is now married to Polyeucte (a lord of Armenia) and she can see him again. The scene is set in a garden with a small temple of Vesta, where Pauline has filed an offering; the Pauline confidante named Stratonice, stands at his side, while Severus was accompanied by his servant Fabian. The drawing is captioned by Pauline words to Severus: “Yes I love Severus, and not doing as an excuse” The book was printed in 800 copies, containing compositions from Maignan etched by Emile Boivin...
