This delicate drawing is made with silverpoint on prepared archival board. The exploration of ephemerality, and the fragility of nature, its textures and movement, is the focus of this work by Margot Glass. The exquisite beauty of a group of simple feathers, often overlooked or considered mundane, is discovered and elevated through close examination and exquisite drawing by the artist. Signed and titled on verso and initialed on recto, lower right corner. Framed in a silver frame, 10 x 8 inches (unframed), 12 x 10 inches (framed). Glass draws with pure silver not only for the delicacy of line the metal point provides, but also for the allure of using a semiprecious metal as a drawing material. Working on an archival board allows the gleam and luster and delicate reflective silver properties of the metallic medium to present as soft and textured against the ground. The surface is primed with traditional silverpoint ground. The silverpoint ground is slightly chalky when dry to provide a subtle toothy surface to grab the silver particles. Glass is interested in the tradition of using nature as idealized ornament in art and design while seeking to carefully observe as accurately as possible in all the irregularity and imperfection. The metallic lines enhance the decorative qualities of the filigree patterns formed by the minute details in each object. Her compositions are tightly cropped to bring the subject as close to the edge of the picture plane as possible. Margot Glass’s work been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. Edward Dufner (1872 - 1957) Monhegan Island, Maine Watercolor on paper Sight 16 x 20 inches Signed lower right With a long-time career as an art teacher and painter of both 'light' and 'dark', Edward Dufner was one of the first students of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy to earn an Albright Scholarship to study painting in New York. In Buffalo, he had exchanged odd job work for drawing lessons from architect Charles Sumner. He also earned money as an illustrator of a German-language newspaper, and in 1890 took lessons from George Bridgman at the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. In 1893, using his scholarship, Dufner moved to Manhattan and enrolled at the Art Students League where he studied with Henry Siddons Mowbray, figure painter and muralist. He also did illustration work for Life, Harper's and Scribner's magazines. Five years later, in 1898, Dufner went to Paris where he studied at the Academy Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens and privately with James McNeill Whistler. Verification of this relationship, which has been debated by art scholars, comes from researcher Nancy Turk who located at the Smithsonian Institution two 1927 interviews given by Dufner. Turk wrote that Dufner "talks in detail about Whistler, about how he prepared his canvasas and about numerous pieces he painted. . . A great read, the interview puts to bed" the ongoing confusion about whether or not he studied with Whistler. During his time in France, Dufner summered in the south at Le Pouleu with artists Richard Emil Miller...

The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's. Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Signed lower left, 'L. Macouillard' for Louis Macouillard (American, 1913-1987) and painted circa 1975. Louis Macouillard was born in San Francisco, CA on Sept. 8, 1913 of French descent and first graduated from Polytechnic High School and the CCAC (1934) before further study at the Art Students League in NYC. Returning to San Francisco, he became art director for the Velvetone Poster Company and maintained a studio on Hotaling Place. He began painting scenes of San Francisco in watercolor during the 1930's and also worked in mosaics and as a muralist. He exhibited with success including at the Oakland Art Gallery (later the Oakland Museum) 1934, and at the San Francisco Art Association (1935). During WWII, he served in the Navy in the South Pacific and produced many artworks of that area which were featured in a six-page spread and cover of the October 1943 issue of Life magazine. As well as fine art, his work included book illustrations and the designs for two U.S. postage stamps (Daniel Boone...
