Born in 1897, Ben-Zion Weinman celebrated his European Jewish heritage in his visual works as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Influenced by Spinoza, Knut Hamsun, and Wladyslaw Reymont, as well as Hebrew literature, Ben-Zion wrote poetry and essays that, like his visual work, attempt to reveal the deep “connection between man and the divine, and between man and earth.”
An emigrant from the Ukraine, he came to the US in 1920. He wrote fairy tales and poems in Hebrew under the name Benzion Weinman, but when he began painting he dropped his last name and hyphenated his first, saying an artist needed only one name.
Ben-Zion was a founding member of “The Ten: An Independent Group” The Ten” a 1930’s avant-garde group, Painted on anything handy. Ben-Zion often used cabinet doors (panels) in his work. Other members of group included Ilya Bolotowsky, Lee Gatch, Adolf Gottlieb, Louis Harris, Yankel Kufeld, Marcus Rothkowitz (later known as Mark Rothko), Louis Schanker, and Joseph Solman. Over the course of the group's existence, seventeen artists exhibited as members of The Ten at nine different shows. The group's nine shows were held at galleries and locations around New York City, including one international exhibition in Paris. "The Girl Can’t Help" Mixed Media Figurative Collage Composition on Panel Board

This piece depicts a colorful collage composition portrait of Marilyn Monroe, as Jon Davenport explores the process of deconstructing iconic imagery from the past and present. Davenport start’s out with photos of his paint-stained studio floor and collages in articles/advertising from an array of vintage magazines collected over the years; plus any other interesting stuff captured on his travels. He then transfers the images to a panel board, layering them on with gel medium, together with strokes, splashes, drips, and splats of paint. Once it's dry, another layer of gel medium is poured on to give it a melting effect. After it drys off again, another layer of paint is added to embellish a few areas and to accentuate or fade out certain aspects. And then, he finally adds a coat of polyurethane for protection and making the colors pop. This unique work is executed on a wood panel board and comes ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso, signed by the artist lower right.

From biology student to owning and running a creative agency in London to a career as a fine artist, life has taken Jon Davenport on a rewarding and unconventional journey. Despite his scientific beginnings, he’s always had a strong artistic streak weaving its way through his different career paths. Growing up in Ipswich, UK, Jon was always an avid drawer, and could often be found with a pencil and paper in hand. With the arrival of his first computer, he embraced the new frontier of digital art and had work published in one of those early computer magazines.
His creative urges took a backseat to get a biology degree at Brunel University in London. It was afterward, in his first job working at the Archant newspaper group in Ipswich, that he quickly progressed from plate maker to becoming an integral member of the art studio. It was during this time that he taught himself photoshop, desktop publishing, and graphic & web design. After a few years, he set up a design agency, and eventually went full time and moved to London. This proved to be a successful move, working for a number of clients such as Nike and Virgin, and gaining praise from the likes of Richard Branson and Tony Blair.

Ryan Wilks is a self-taught artist based in Kansas City, Missouri. Their work explores the various realities of queer existence. Primarily creating with oils, watercolors, sculptural assemblage, and ritual, their work sheds light on queer expression of spirituality and sexuality. Their bodies of work address and confront religion used as weapon and explores new modes of prayer through visual and participatory exhibitions. While religious and archetypal iconography such as the Devil and Lilith are seen within their figures in their paintings and used to express gender and queer ideologies, the work itself does not adopt the feeling of weighted religious rites. Instead, the work invites the viewer to participate in a modernized expression of spirit.
Through figurative and narrative drawing and painting, through community-based performance ritual and ceremony, Wilks makes art that explores the various realities of queer existence. Gleaning inspiration from centuries old religious iconography and the oral and written histories documenting the queer experience from the beginning of time to their own personal experience today, Wilks' work strives to depict the push/pull, persecute/elevate relationships of humanity, sexuality, and spirituality.
The use of more traditional materials and methods in Wilks' painting and drawing is an intentional nod to Italian masters such as Caravaggio, Titian, and Raphael, but it is the playfulness of Matisse’s figures and the contorting figures of Schiele that have influenced their work the most.
Ritual and ceremonial performance is an integral aspect of Wilks'art. The use of objects, both found and made, and base elemental ingredients in occult practices are key components to their performances. Through movement, through ceremony, through studied and adaptive ritual, Wilks is able to engage an audience and create moments of sacred memory. Wilks' performance work is created and displayed in tandem with their 2-D work and further explores concepts displayed within their paintings and drawings.
Through these methods of creating, engagement, and display of their art, Wilks strives to express the personal narrative of their queer experience, of their peers’, of those who have passed, and, ultimately, for future generations to research, decode, confront, and enjoy.
Wilks has exhibited their work in at least 20 different solo exhibitions across the Kansas City Metropolitan area as well as being featured in 18 different publications regarding their work. Wilks' most recent artist residencies include the Artist in Residence program at the Crossroads Hotel, located in the heart of Kansas City's well known Crossroads Arts District, January-February 2020; and the Artist in Residence program at Arts KC, Jun-July 2020. In 2019, Wilks was nominated for "Best Exhibition" in the Pitch KC's annual "Best of KC" year-end round up for their exhibition "Hell", originally shown at Leedy-Voulkos Art Center.

Original Title: Natura morta di fiori entro vasi biansati (Still life of Bouquet in two-handled vases).
On the back of the panel, two labels are glued "da Milano", "A Piacenza", ("from Milan" "to Piacenza").
The labels indicate a transfer of the artwork, perhaps in the first half of the twentieth century, from Piacenza to Milan. While instead the style and technique make us understand the artwork was commissioned or created in the Milan of Federico Borromeo, archbishop of Milan from1595 to 1630.
The author of the painting can be identified in the person of Vincenzo Volò, a talented artist who fell into oblivion, recently rediscovered and appreciated. Founder of the Vincenzini family, he was born in Franche-Comté in 1620 (in the past its birth was erroneously fixed to 1606). In the mid-forties of the seventeenth century he arrived to Milan, and held a leading artistic role: he was the founder of a family workshop that imposed his style and strongly influenced Milanese collecting with his still lifes and influenced generations and generations of painters. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – a boy, a young lad leaps over the fence, seen here mid-flight. It's clearly important to the boy. His focus and sense of achievement ring out. Drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes render the scene, but also note the toned wood coming through as color and texture. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact.
