International Herald Tribune, Nov. 28-29, 1998, p. 9, illus.
Bonvin's work has been compared with that of the eighteenth-century artist Chardin, whom Bonvin greatly admired, and from whose work he often borrowed particular motifs. Amongst the artists he personally encouraged were Théodule Ribot and Fantin-Latour.
He was one of a group of artists who challenged the idea that still-life was a mode of artistic expression inferior to the lofty genre of history and religious painting. Bonvin championed the Realist conviction that everyday subject matter was the trues form of artistic expression.
Bonvin was known for keen observation skills and great restraint. In his paintings, you can almost feel the moment between breaths as the subject matter is contemplated and then committed to canvas. This a superb, very personal and very quiet study of the village of Montfaucon on what appears to be an afternoon in the Argonne region in Northeastern France known its deep valleys and dense woodlands.
François is one of the most interesting painters of the 19th century. Bonvin was born in humble circumstances in Paris and had a very difficult childhood. He was the son of a police officer and a seamstress; when he was four years old his mother died of tuberculosis. Young François was left in the care of an old woman who underfed him. Soon his father married another seamstress and brought the child back into the household. Nine additional children were born (one of whom was his half-brother, the painter Leon...

Narcisse Virgilio Diaz de la Peña's father, Thomas, a bourgeois from Salamanca exiled by King Joseph following a political conspiracy, had settled in Bordeaux with his wife Maria Manuela Belasco. The family then moved to England, believing they could find a safer sanctuary there. However, Thomas died after three years, leaving Maria with sole responsibility for her child's education. She returned to France, moving to Bordeaux, Montpellier and Lyons in quick succession before finally settling in Paris, where she supported herself and her son by teaching. Narcisse was scarcely ten years old when she died, and he was taken in by a Protestant minister who led a secluded life at Bellevue. He took refuge in solitude, spending time in the woods at Fleury, Meudon, Sèvres and St-Cloud. Whilst out walking, he was bitten by a viper and had to undergo an amputation due to blood poisoning. He initially found employment with a printer, where he worked under particularly difficult conditions, before finding employment in a porcelain factory in Paris. He studied for a while with the painter Souchon, David's former pupil, although Diaz was largely self-taught. He exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1831, and then nearly every year from 1834 to 1859, sometimes showing three or even four pictures. In 1831, he exhibited Love Scene. In 1834, he showed Flight of the Turks; A Turk; View of the Region around Saragossa; and Archers Pursuing Wicked Boys. In 1835: the Battle of Medina-Coeli; Spanish Girls Bathing by a River; and Park, Stirling Castle. In 1836, the Adoration of the Shepherds. In 1837: Ferry Crossing with the Effect of the Setting Sun; A Mill, Sunset Effect; and View of the Gorges of Apremont. In 1838: Old Ben Emeck, Retired to Lush Countryside, Tells His Wives the Extraordinary Adventures of His Life as a Pirate. In 1840: Nymphs in Calypso's Grotto Sing of the Battles of Ulysses; and Women of Algiers. In 1841: The Dream; and Flight into the Desert. In 1844: View of Bas-Bréau; Bohemians Going to a Festival; Evil Spell; and Oriental Woman. In 1845: Portraits of Mme A.; Mme L. L; and Mme de T. In 1846: Deserted Women; Garden of Love; Forest Interior; Enchantress; Leda; Oriental Woman; Desertion; and Wisdom. In 1847: Bas-Bréau; Forest Interior; Dogs in a Forest; Oriental Repose, The Dream; Oriental Woman; Women of Algiers; Conversation; Cupid Waking a Nymph; and Bathing Girl In 1848: Diana Departing for the Hunt; Venus and Adonis; Bohemians Listening to the Predictions of a Young Girl; The Walk; and Pack in the Forest of Fontainebleau. In 1855: Last Tears; Nymph Tormented by Cupid; The Rival; Nymph Asleep; and End of a Beautiful Day. In 1859: Galatea; Cupid's Education; Venus and Adonis; Cupid Punished; Don't Come In; Fairy with Toys; Viper Pond; and Portraits of Mme A. F. and Mme S.. Diaz was primarily an independent painter. The essential and characteristic difference between Diaz's style and that of, say, Théodore Rousseau resides in the fact that Diaz painted the ephemeral. In his woodland scenes, he observes the movements of light and shade over a very small area. By contrast, Rousseau paints vast landscapes, evoking a sense of permanence that corresponds to their dimensions, in which variations of light and shade do not appreciably affect the subject as a whole. Diaz was essentially a painter of the moment, and because of his 'snapshot' approach he can be considered a Pre-Impressionist. His influence was far-reaching. Monticelli, who used a knife and depicted forms imprecisely, was influenced by him, as was Fantin-Latour, who adopted the same principles and used no definite structure in his brushwork. Fantin-Latour was a great friend of Renoir, in whose home it wasn't unusual to find Diaz. Diaz's colour and design, and even his brushwork, can be found in Ziem's Venetian extravaganzas and magical oriental worlds. Comprehensive exhibitions of his work have been rare, although he is frequently represented in group exhibitions dedicated to the development of landscape painting or to the Barbizon School. However, the 1877 exhibition at the École National des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the 1968 exhibition at the Pavillon des Arts in Paris are worthy of note.

Sheep in a Sussex Lane with Pevensey Bay in the distance
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1875
Image size: 17.25 inches x 25.25 inches
Size including frame: 23.25 inches x 31.25 inches
A tranquil landscape scene of a shepherd and his flock resting in a lane near Pevensey Bay, Sussex by William Luker. The ruins of Pevensey Castle can be seen in the distance with the sea beyond.
William Luker Snr was born in 1828 at Faringdon, Berkshire to William and Jane Luker (née Charlwood). His father was a plumber and glazier by trade and the family lived at London Street in Faringdon. Little is known about his early education and it is believed for the most part he was self -taught. However, given the quality of his work and the fact that his family were able to keep a servant, he may well have received some artistic tuition.
By the early 1850’s, he had begun earning a living as an artist by advertising in local directories, earning commissions from local landowners. He made his debut at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1851 and was a prolific exhibitor there for over 40 years. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1852 and also exhibited at the British Institution.
He married the artist Ada Augusta Margetts (1839-1930) on 27 October 1864. Their eldest son William Luker Jnr (1867-1951) also became a well-known artist. The couple soon moved to London where they lived at 22 Gloucester Terrace, Campden Hill from where they both exhibited. From 1867, they lived at 15 Sheffield Terrace in Kensington until 1874 when they moved for the final time to 22 Notting Hill Square, later renamed Campden Hill Square in 1893. He died at Campden Hill-square on 28 February, 1905.
Luker specialised in landscapes featuring animals such as sheep and cattle, horses and deer. He travelled around visiting areas such as Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Wales and the Highlands. However, he also made trips to Egypt and Libya producing a series of Oriental scenes in the early 1860’s. His works show a great attention to detail and his use of a lighter palette gives his subjects a luminous quality that instantly attracts the viewer. Examples of his paintings are held by the Atkinson Art Gallery, National Library of Wales, Newstead Abbey...

Early 19th Century English watercolour of woodland near Croxdale Hall
Located in Harkstead, GB
A very attractive and meticulously executed view of a rocky landscape within the woods dating to 1823. This would suit a library or study with its muted tones and skifull draughtsmanship.
William Nicholson (1781-1844)
Near Croxdale Hall
Signed with initials and inscribed with title and date 1823
Pen, ink and grey wash
11 x 8 inches, image only
17 x 13 inches without frame
The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...

The painting is a figurative landscape entitled the Woodman's family and entails five figures and a dog gathered around a tree that the Woodman is tackling with his axe. The painting is signed and indistinctly dated (only visible with ultra violent light) lower left, the date being 1869. For me, the highlight of the painting is the artistry and attention to detail with which Williams has portrayed the light on the trees above and the exquisite colouring of the leaves. There are even two birds finely depicted in the tree foliage.
Signed and indistinctly dated 1869 lower left (only visible under ultraviolet light).
Provenance. Berkshire estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, image size is 40 inches by 36 inches and in good condition.
Housed in a complementary frame. Framed size is 48 inches by 44 inches and in good condition.
Edward Charles Williams (London 10 July 1807 – 25 July 1881) was an English landscape painter during the Victorian Era, and a member of the Williams family of painters. He was the eldest son of the painter Edward Williams (1781–1855) and Ann Hildebrandt (c.1780–1851), and a member of the Williams family of painters, who were related to such famous artists as James Ward RA and George Morland. His father was a well-known landscape artist, who taught him how to paint; otherwise he received no formal instruction. He adopted much of his father's style and technique, and like the other painters of his family, he devoted himself to landscapes, producing rich and tranquil views of Barnes, Cumberland, Kent, Surrey and the Thames. His paintings are now highly sought after. Williams married his first wife Mary Ann Challenger on 11 December 1839 in Westminster. Mary Ann died in 1857 in London, and his only child Alice Williams was born shortly afterwards to Sarah Susannah Horley, who had been Mary Ann's nurse – Edward and Sarah did not marry for another 10 years until 3 October 3, 1868, when they wed at the St. Pancras Old Church in Camden, London. He largely stopped painting after the 1859 death of his second wife, adding value to the small number of paintings that he did produce from 1859 on − Springer in the Bracken, The Lap Dog, The Ploughman's walk home, The Ducks at Tilbury and Primrose at St Mary's (Primrose was the Verger's Cat). Some suggest that he suffered a breakdown after his wife's death, given his choice of subjects in these later years. The location of three of these post-1859 works are unknown, and they are assumed lost during two world wars. He signed some of his work as E Williams, which leads to confusion with his father, who painted in a similar style, and at times he signed as C Williams to purposely avoid such confusion. Because many of the paintings of both father and son are unsigned, it can be difficult to correctly attribute their work. Edward Charles also collaborated on several paintings with William Shayer, where Williams would paint the landscape, and Shayer would add in figures and animals; his Near Wantage, Berkshire is a good example. He died 25 July 1881 at Shepherds Bush in London and is buried with Sarah Horley and their daughter Alice in Hammersmith Old Cemetery, close to other family graves. Edward Charles Williams was born into an artist family that is sometimes referred to as the Barnes School. His father and five surviving brothers were all noted landscape painters during the Victorian era. Three of the sons of Edward Williams changed their last names to protect the identity of their art. Edward Williams (father) Henry John Boddington, George Augustus Williams, Arthur Gilbert, Sidney Richard Percy, Alfred Walter Williams.
