Lift is a figurative artwork featuring a female swimmer through the water. It is a Pastel on archival board. It is the first time in 30 years Bennett has created artwork with pastels. The Artwork is 16" x 20.5". It is framed to 20" x 24.5" with a white frame. Carol Bennett spends all of her time surrounded by water, and a great deal within it. Her work is a meditative journey through both the water and through life. She is intrigued by how life continues to flow and change, being both in the moment and timeless. The viewer will experience being in a state “flow” – where the currents of the ocean suspend life and self, and the unexpected floats to the surface. Carol's work has been featured in many solo and group exhibits throughout California, New York, Martha's Vineyard and Hawaii including a 2007 solo show at the First Hawaiian Center at the Contemporary Museum of Art (Honolulu) and a 2018 group show "Making Waves" exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Maurice Valadon ( Utrillo ) 1883 -1955, was a French painter who was born in the Parisienne quarter of Montmartre and is one of the very few French impressionist painters to have been born there. His mother was Suzanne Valadon and she was also a very well known French painter who was a model for Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas and many others, she bore her son Maurice but the father was never acknowledged and consequently a friend Miquel Utrillo adopted the boy and gave him his name stating that he would be glad to put his name to the work of either Renoir or Degas, however it is well known Utrillo was not the true paternal party. Maurice was effectively taught by his mother to paint and she was self taught, having sat for some of the greatest impressionist painters of the time, where the son and mother differed was on the subject , he predominantly painted suburban and city scenes from plein air and sometimes from memory also painting pictures from the view from his window. His style and manner was maintained throughout his career, however he suffered from regular mental disturbance and eventually in the mid 1930's he moved with his wife to Le Vesinet which is just outside Paris where he effectively retired. There is an abundance of biographical detail to be found on the internet and it would do a great injustice here to the artist to attempt his biography. This painting contains various mannerisms and hidden information which we are given to understand confirms this painting to be by Utrillo himself, however without a clear and decisive signature we have listed it as ' attributed ', which we are certain to prove to be Utrillo himself, the work is monogrammed 'V' which is further the identification of this work, we believe the 'V' stands for Valadon, he signed his works Maurice Utrillo V...

Nellie attended Oregon State in Corvallis and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a BA in Anthropology and Art. After many years as a faculty and Air Force wife and mother, Nellie resumed her full time interest in art. She studied under many notable artist-teachers, including Harding Black, Harold Roney, Dennis Olson and Kent Rush. Nellie Buel's work has been accepted in local and national juried shows. She has won numerous awards and prizes from art groups such as the San Antonio Art League and the San Antonio Watercolor Group, among others. Nellie's work is also included in permanent collections at St. Mary's University, the Healy-Murphy Learning Center, McAllen International Museum, the Hal Prince Collection (NY), Tamarind Institute Archives (Albuquerque, NM), and the McNay Art Museum Study Collection. Nellie V. Buel died in the United States in 2002. Nellie V. (Upton) Buel, born January 15, 1908, Portland, OR, died November 15, 2002. Her work has been accepted in local and national juried shows, with awards and prizes from art groups such as San Antonio Art League, San Antonio Watercolor Group, Hill Country Arts Foundations, Texas Watercolor Society, and International Society of Experimental Artists. Nellie's work is also included in permanent collections at St. Mary's University, Healy-Murphy Learning Center, McAllen International Museum, Hal Prince Collection (NY), Tamarind Institute Archives (Albuquerque, NM) and McNay Art Museum Study Collection. After she and her husband retired to Boerne, they founded the Cibolo Studio in Comfort, Nellie's art studio and gallery, which she shared with Debbie Little-Wilson. Working in her studio, participating in shows, and sharing knowledge, techniques, and ideas with other artists, she continued to expand her artistic endeavors and creativity until very recently. She also gave of her time and talent through her teaching and critiquing other artists' works. Sadly, the contents of Cibolo Studio were heavily damaged during July, 2002 floods, causing closure of the studio after 30 years at the same location. She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Col. (USAF) Jack Buel. She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Todd Hanks (George); son, John Thomas Buel; three grandaughters, Kathryn Buel, Elizabeth Buel, and Natalie Mund (Randy) and three great-grandchildren.
