PROVENANCE Metro Pictures, New York Famous as a collector of American junk, including a trove of thrift store paintings once sought by art collector Charles Saatchi, Jim Shaw draws on his vast stores of pop cultural artifacts in his work. The My Mirage (1986–91) project comprises nearly 170 drawings, silkscreens, photographs, sculptures, films, and paintings based on a Shaw stand-in called Billy, who grows from childhood to psychosis to born-again Christianity. Billy exists amid a 1960s and ’70s visual overload of pulp novels, comic books, records, and psychedelic posters. Best known for his eclectic range, his canvases are formal abstractions that use a variety of processes to experiment with surface—creating striations, cracks, marks and blurs at times juxtaposed with hard-edge geometric abstraction. As a young man, Moses joined the military during World War II as a Navy Medical Corps surgical technician and discovered an aptitude for treating injuries. After his tour ended, he enrolled in Long Beach City College's pre-med program with the intent of becoming a doctor. After a painting course with Pedro Miller, Moses switched his major to art. He then went on to study at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he would receive both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. While enrolled in his master’s program, fellow artist Craig Kauffman introduced Moses to Walter Hopps, future owner of the influential Ferus Gallery. Though he’d been exhibiting since 1949, Moses first showed at Ferus in 1958—while still enrolled at UCLA—and quickly became part of the “Cool School” with artists Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, Ed Ruscha, John Altoon, and others. Following graduation, Moses moved to New York City where he became friends with Franz Kline, Milton Resnick, William de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, with whom he would exhibit in New York, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. In 1959, Moses married Avilda Peters and moved back to Los Angeles to start a family, travel, and continue his painting career. Always working with process and experimenting with materials as a painter, Moses was critically lauded for his bold composition and innovation. In 1968, he received a Tamarind Lithography Fellowship as well as the offer of a teaching position at the University of California, Los Angeles, his alma mater, where he would teach until 1972. After travels in Europe, he would return to UCLA to teach until 1976, the same year he was recognized with a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant and his first museum shows: a show of drawings from 1958-1970s at the Wight Gallery at UCLA, and a show of new abstract and cubist red paintings at LACMA curated by Stephanie Barron, the latter marking a transitional moment in his career. While drawing was prominent in his work in the 1960s and early 70s, by the mid-70s, Moses was turning increasingly to painting. With this exhibition we honour James Coignard, showing some of his last carborundum engravings and paintings as well as presenting the book “L’œuvre gravé de James Coignard” volume VI. In this edition, we have gathered together all the engravings that James Coignard produced between June 2005 and his decease, on 7 March 2008. Behind him he left many fond memories and a life’s work as a great artist. James Coignard’s principal modes of expression were oil on canvas and gravure au carborundum, but also in bronze and glass sculptures as well as in ceramics. His work has been shown on more than 400 exhibitions, primarily in Central Europe and Scandinavia, but also in Canada and the USA. His first Swedish exhibition was at Malmö Museum in 1956. The early 1970s saw the start of a long-term liaison with Galleri Östermalm in Stockholm, owned by Editions Sonet. Paul Henry Brach, (born March 13, 1924 in New York City - d.November 16, 2007 in Easthampton, New York) was an American abstract painter and a lecturer and educator. As an abstract painter Paul Brach exhibited his work in New York with the Leo Castelli Gallery, the Cordier & Eckstrom Gallery, and with the André Emmerich Gallery and then later with Flomenhaft Gallery. Paul Brach's estate is represented exclusively by Eric Firestone Gallery. Paul Brach was born in New York City and was raised in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He went to the University of Iowa where he studied painting with Grant Wood. He served in the US Army during World War II. After the war, he finished school in Iowa on the GI Bill. At the University of Iowa he met the artist Miriam Schapiro and in 1946 they married. By 1951 they moved back to New York City and befriended many of the artists in the downtown Abstract expressionist New York School, including Joan Mitchell, Larry Rivers, Knox Martin and Michael Goldberg. He was associated with the New York print studio Atelier 17 (Stanley Hayter) During the early 1960s Brach had part-time teaching jobs at The New School, Cooper Union, The Parsons School of Design and Cornell University's New York City Program. In 1967 Brach and his wife Miriam Schapiro moved to Southern California. He became the Dean of the CalArts program in Los Angeles in 1969. As dean of the School of Art at the California Institute from 1969 to 1975, Mr. Brach hired John Baldessari, Allan Kaprow and the critic Max Kozloff, among others.
