Carlos Betancourt (born San Juan, Puerto Rico 1966) is an American multi-disciplinary artist. His artworks explore issues of memory, and his own experiences, while also dwelling in issues of nature, the environment and matters of beauty, identity and communication. He has worked as a curator, furniture designer and has collaborated in with Louis Vuitton as well as on architectural and site-specific private and public commissions with architect Alberto Latorre.
Betancourt artwork is in part inspired by his relationship with nature as well as by the diverse cultures and history of the Caribbean basin, Florida and the Americas. Also by artist Ana Mendieta interventions, Robert Rauschenberg assemblages, Andy Warhol perceptions, Neo Rauch compositions, and a Federico Fellini-esque cast of characters for his photo assemblages. Additionally, he relates to some of theorist Jean Baudrillard views about art and his philosophy on objects; French artist Gustave Courbet's idea that "the only possible source for living art is the artist's own experiences", as well as the Martinican writer and theoretician, Edouard Glissant's belief that ..."the past resides in material objects that only release their hidden meanings when encountered imaginatively and sensuously. This is a lovely mixed media painting by popular Philadelphia based artist, Tom Judd. Provenance: Estate of Patrick Eddington. Patrick Eddington was a Utah school teacher who had the improbable idea of writing to his favorite artists and asking them to draw or paint pictures of cats. “This project is a labor of love," Eddington wrote of his endeavor in a 2004 letter. “It will culminate as a large book and traveling exhibition. It will also help Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I’ve asked individuals I admire to create cat-related works. They are not the typical cat images but creative works.” Patrick Eddington passed away in early 2016 and his vision was, unfortunately, never realized. "My work challenges the boundary between control and uncertainty. The grounding I feel through my work is an expression of the space that exists between these two phenomena. I mix my color and pour my paint, unsure of the outcome. I pick up the panel and start to dance with the movement of the paint as it slides from one side to the next. As the layers of color accumulate on each painting, the opportunity to manipulate the space between control and uncertainty diminishes. A sense of urgency arises, which is expressed in the textured movement of color. Paradoxically, as the process unfolds, my desire to control dissipates, and I am left with the ambiguous feeling of uncertainty. This cycle is repeated endlessly, incessantly, as if my will alone could leave its imprint. Whereas in the past this ambiguity would disturb me, I now find the process reassuring. It is clear that, despite my best intentions, each piece will choose its own path."
Kristina Quinones was born and raised in Connecticut. Received her bachelor's degree in Printmaking from the University of Connecticut in 2001 then moved to California.
