'Lost in the Clouds' is a large acrylic and gold leaf on canvas landscape painting of square format created by American artist Jim Seitz in 2023. Featuring a gold, grey, white and blue palette, the painting gives great importance to the white tree. The lower part of the composition is occupied by the golden presence of the ground, accented by a luminous tree that leads our eye to the middle of the painting. Unframed, this horizontal landscape painting is signed lower right. Jim Seitz was born in Chicago and currently resides in Louisiana. He grew up in Texas and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He began showing talent and love for art as a young child, becoming more serious during his college years. During the time he worked for the university, providing medical illustrations for the Science Department, He has traveled extensively throughout his life, living for several years in the Middle East, before moving to South East Asia. His travel experiences have included everything from cave explorations in the mountains of Iran to working in the jungles of New Guinea and Borneo. His preferred medium during that time was ink and watercolor, as it was easy to transport to and from remote locations. While influenced by various 19th century landscape artists, Jim has developed a unique technique characterized by tonal, minimalist representation of his subject matter. Through this approach, less becomes more. His appreciation for color and his creative perspective lend to pieces that are traditional, moving to abstract. His utilization of gold leaf applied over heavy textured canvas and then glazed with multiple layers of acrylics provides an effect that is quickly becoming this artist’s signature style. Will Foote View of Arizona Desert near Wickenberg, circa 1927 Signed lower center; titled and dated on the reverse Oil on artist's board 12 x 16 inches Foote was born on June 29, 1874 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and died on January 27, 1965, in Sarasota, Florida. He was in Old Lyme, 1901-65; and in Cos Cob, 1903. Will Howe Foote was one of the earliest artists at Old Lyme and one who adopted the town as home. He first went there the summer of 1901 with his uncle, William H. Howe, a painter of cattle, who had been told about the beauties of the countryside by Henry Ward Ranger. Foote had himself heard of Old Lyme when he had met Clark Voorhees in France. He and his uncle were both from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Foote's father was an executive in the furniture industry that made the city famous. Encouraged to be an artist by his father, he began his professional training at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1894. He became friends there with a fellow Michigan student, Frederick Frieseke, who would study with him again at the Art Students League in New York, where Foote worked in 1895-96 under H. Siddons Mowbray and Kenyon Cox. In 1897 he and Frieseke went to the Academic Julian in Paris, where Foote studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He was at Julian's until 1900, except for an Italian trip, summers at Laren, Holland, or Etaples, France, and a short period at Whistler's school in Paris. He exhibited twice at the Old Salon, and when he returned to the United States in 1900, he had a one-man exhibition in his hometown. Will Howe Foote's paintings were well received on his return from abroad. He exhibited frequently at the National Academy of Design and became an associate member in 1910. His awards included a bronze medal at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904 and a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Once he visited Old Lyme, Foote returned every summer. In 1902 he was hired as assistant to Frank DuMond at the Lyme Summer School of Art, which was sponsored by the Art Students League of New York. Sometime in 1903 he also taught a session in Cos Cob. After 1906, when the League moved its Lyme classes to Woodstock, New York, Foote continued in Old Lyme as a private instructor. In 1907 he was married to Helen Kirtland Freeman, whom he had met a year or two earlier when she had come to the Lyme art colony as a student of Henry Rankin Poore. Fellow artist William Chadwick was best man at the wedding. The Footes began building a house on Sill Lane in Old Lyme and upon its completion in 1909 spent every spring, summer and fall there, where Foote devoted full time to painting. The Gregory Smiths, old friends from Grand Rapids, arrived in Old Lyme in 1910 and became neighbors. Foote's early works in Connecticut, such as A Summer's Night reflect the artist's interest in soft, atmospheric scenes dominated by a single, overriding tone. Each stage had to be experienced and has led to a deeper understanding of what my expression in paint is all about. Painting traditional realism with good design as an important element was where I began. Now, the evolution of my painting process has brought me to a point in which the subject, the texture of the oil medium and the physical application of the brushstrokes have become profoundly intertwined. All are so necessary to the finished work that if one were to be taken away the work would be left incomplete. My hope is that the synthesis of the subject, design, expressive brush strokes and the texture of the paint come together to create a work of art in which the viewer experiences all of these elements at once in a powerful statement on canvas. “New Mexico is a land of earthy colors and textures. Rocks, dirt, twiggy plants, reds and ochres against blue grays, dry, wet, cold, hot, mostly hard and rough create a movement in visual and tactile rhythms that surround me. There are times when I am standing in the New Mexico landscape on a warm day when I want to lay down and embrace it. I can’t help but be madly in love with the textures of everything around me. I am drawn to the irresistible forces that seem to bring me closer to the earth. The more I experience these textural qualities of the land, the more I am compelled to use them to express what I want to say. “ Martha was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended Carlow University and received a degree in art and art education. Later she studied art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Southern California. At the beginning of her career she worked as an art teacher and art department head in Maryland and California. After becoming a full-time artist she taught watercolor and oil painting workshops in the United States and abroad. After moving to Colorado she became a master instructor for a branch of the Art Students League in Colorado Springs and then set up her own classes in her studio where she presently teaches on a weekly basis. She was director for many years of large adventure workshops combining painting and exploring. Some of these adventures include Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, where Georgia O’Keefe painted, a yearly excursion on a Clipper Ship in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas stopping at many ports to paint and an exciting workshop in Salvador, Brazil, painting the colorful region and people there. It was due to these painting trips on which the artists had to carry around all their painting equipment that she put together a compact painting travel kit that she marketed and that many plein air artists use as they travel to their many painting locations. Martha’s work has been featured in many art publications such as: Southwest Art Magazine, Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Artist’s Magazine and Art Collector’s Magazine. Her work has been used in several books on painting; “Making Your Watercolors Look Professional,” by Carole Katchen, The Best of Watercolor Series, Rockport, Press, “How to Paint Better Watercolor Paintings,” by Jerald Brommer and Jerald Brommer’s Art Education Posters for High Schools. Her work has received many awards in national juried competitions including numerous best of shows awards.
