Gary Kremen
Large 5+-Foot Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas by Gary Kremen, Framed

Circa 1995

About the Item

Untitled Landscape, an original oil on canvas by Gary Kremen, is a piece for the true collector. Kremen's fine attention to detail is evident here, depicting a desert landscape set beneath vast mountains, complete with cactus and wildlife in the middle ground. The sky with its range of light to deep blues fills the top of the painting. This example showcases Kremen's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with the frameless style of hanging. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for landscapes, desert scenery, realism, and nature. Born in Wisconsin, Kremen was always captivated by art. But, his passion didn’t take real shape until after earning his bachelor’s degree in land planning from the University of Wisconsin. He initially planned on pursuing a graduate degree, but the art world came calling, and Kremen left his job as an architect to spend 2 ½ years with a national art touring group, selling pencil and pen-and-ink works. After being on the road, he landed in Alaska in 1977 and became a commercial fisherman to earn enough money to support his painting. The outdoors suited him, and eventually became his main artistic inspiration. He started painting landscapes, the most famous of which – a curved memorial to Prince William Sound – was 62 feet in length. It was inspired by the Exxon Valdez oil spill off the coast of Alaska, one that Kremen himself helped contain. The painting would go on to be toured across the country, and in 2000, an auction valued the piece at over $250,000. Beyond the fine arts, Gary was also an inventor, assisting in the development of booms to contain spills and founding Art Echo, a unique sounding device for photos or art prints. But, all that came secondary to painting. Art was always his passion, one that generated an impressive array of works that have been exhibited across the country. The lure of family brought Kremen to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he opened a studio and gallery. He loved the sunshine there. Gary Kremen passed away from a heart attack in 2001, at the age of 51.
