Provenance: From the Estate of the Artist, to The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, to current owner Beginning in the late 1950s, Warhol began carrying a Polaroid camera documenting his friends as he moved through New York society. In the mid-1960s, Warhol began using a camera for his art-making process when he would take subjects - often leaders in the art world, such as collectors and gallerists, or his friends - to photo booths near the original (“Silver”) Factory in Times Square. This was Warhol’s initial foray into serial repetition and removing the artist’s hand altogether. Photo booth strips became source material for Warhol’s paintings of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including iconic works such as the paintings of Edith Skull and Holly Solomon. In the 1970s, Warhol continued using the Polaroid as ‘his date’ on all his social outings and travels. However, in 1977, Zurich-based art dealer Thomas Amman gave Warhol a 35mm Minox camera, at which point he began documenting nearly every day of his life with black-and-white photos (unique silver gelatin prints usually measuring 8” x 10”). Around the same time, Warhol purchased a Polaroid Big Shot camera, for use at The Factory to create the singular vocabulary of his prints and paintings. From this studio process, Warhol created his largest body of work. Fernando Natalici Al Goldstein New York 1979
By Fernando Natalici
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Al Goldstein by heralded New York underground photographer Fernando Natalici Silver Gelatin Print, c.1979. 11x14 inches. Hand signed & dated on the verso from an edition of 2. Some minor residue or fading to edges and minor signs of handling; otherwise in very good condition for its age. Al Goldstein: If Hugh Hefner strove to put a sleek, air-brushed image on sexual freedom in the 1960s, rival publisher Al Goldstein was the polar opposite. Unabashedly abrasive and foul-mouthed, the cigar-chomping, a larger than life Goldstein called his explicit magazine Screw. When he co-founded Screw in 1968, the American legal system was embroiled in a battle over what constitutes obscenity. Goldstein never envisioned himself as a champion of free speech, but fought for what he said were his own prurient interests. The porn magazine's scathing, scatological editorials railed against religious leaders and the government for justifying war while imprisoning erotic magazine...
