Death and Life / - United in Laughter -
By Hans Frank
Located in Berlin, DE
Hans Frank (1884 Vienna - 1948 Salzburg), Death and Life, 1911. Lithograph, 18 cm x 31 cm (depiction), 25.5 cm x 38.7 cm (sheet size), signed “H.[ans] Frank” in pencil lower right and inscribed “Tod und Leben” lower left.
- darkened, remains of an old mounting on the verso
- United in Laughter -
Here, Hans Frank refers to the skull as a vanitas motif. In Renaissance and Baroque portraits, this motif symbolizes the transience of the sitter, whose head has become a skull over time. Penitents, such as St. Jerome, often hold skulls in melancholy contemplation. Here, however, the boy stands up for life itself. He boldly grabs the skull and laughs at the absurdity of life and death. The laughter of death joins the laughter of life, and vice versa. The child's thumb penetrates the skull's cheekbone to illustrate the inseparable connection between death and life.
About the artist
Hans Frank studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts from 1902 to 1906 and then studied painting under Franz Rumpler at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1907 to 1911. In 1911, he received a substantial travel grant from the emperor, which he used to travel to Switzerland, Paris, London, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. After serving in World War I, Frank moved to St. Marein im Mürztal, returning to Vienna in 1925. He took further study trips to Italy, southern France, and the Austrian countryside. In 1927, Frank became a member of the London Society of Color Printers. An exhibition of his work at the Medici Gallery in London brought him international recognition. He joined the Pasadena Printmakers Society of California and established contacts in Canada. In addition to his highly regarded paintings, Frank primarily worked as a graphic artist. He created over 300 prints and developed a new gradient technique for the fern woodcut with his twin brother, Leo Frank...

Familia Indigena III
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Familia Indigena III" 1983 is an original colors lithograph on Wove paper by renown Costa Rican/Mexican artist Francisco Zuniga, 1912-1998. It is hand signed, dated and numbered 67/100 in pencil by the artist. The artwork size is 22 x 29.85 inches, framed size is 28.5 x 36.5 inches. Published and printed by La Poligrafa, Barcelona, Spain. Referenced and pictured in the artist's catalogue raisonne "Zuniga The Complete Graphics, 1972-1984, by Jerry Brewster, plate #93. Beautifully framed in a custom acrylic display box, with brown fabric backing. It is in excellent condition.
About the artist:
Internationally acclaimed sculptor and printmaker Francisco Zuñiga was born in Costa Rica. He studied drawing, stone sculpture, and engraving at the School of Fine Arts in San Jose. Later, in 1936, he studied stone carving at La Esmeralda in Mexico City. He was appointed to the faculty of La Esmeralda where he remained until his retirement in 1970.
Zuniga's art reflects a love and respect for Central American people and traditions. In 1972, he created his first lithograph. As a complement to his emotionally powerful sculpture, Zuniga's prints articulate the sensitivity and sensuality of the human figure. He has been the recipient of numerous international prizes and awards. His work is exhibited frequently in prominent galleries throughout the world and may be found in the permanent collections of twenty-nine museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Mexican Museum in San Francisco, and the Phoenix Art Museum.
In 1936, Francisco Zuniga left San Jose, Costa Rica, where he had studied drawing at the School of Fine Arts and worked as an assistant in his father's studio, a workshop which produced religious sculpture for the churches and convents in and around the city. His destination was Mexico City. It was from there that he would begin an illustrious career as a sculptor and draftsman. Zuñiga's exploration into the nuances of volume, in line and space, are demonstrated in this, the most complete exhibition of his work to be shown in more than a decade.
Mexico City in 1936 was, even then, one of the major art centers of the Americas. As such it witnessed and participated in many of the frenzied and controversial art movements which reflected the political and intellectual climate of the first three decades of the twentieth century. Muralism, the graphic arts, the incorporation of in-ternational movements had produced an artistic climate, which would eventually attract to Mexico international artists and intellectuals such as Sergei Eisenstein...

In this Japanese name, the surname is Isoda.
Isoda Koryūsai (礒田 湖龍斎, 1735–1790) was a Japanese ukiyo-e print designer and painter active from 1769 to 1790.
Life and career
Koryūsai was born in 1735 and worked as a samurai in the service of the Tsuchiya clan. He became a masterless rōnin after the death of the head of the clan and moved to Edo (modern Tokyo) where he settled near Ryōgoku Bridge in the Yagenbori area. He became a print designer there under the art name Haruhiro in 1769, at first making samurai-themed designs. The ukiyo-e print master Harunobu died in 1770, and about that time Koryūsai began making prints in a similar style of life in the pleasure districts.
Koryūsai was a prolific designer of individual prints and print series,[1] most of which appeared between 1769 and 1881.
In 1782, Koryūsai applied for and received the Buddhist honour hokkyō ("Bridge of the Law") from the imperial court and thereafter used the title as part of his signature. His output slowed from this time, though he continued to design prints until his death in 1790.
Works
Koryūsai created a total of 2,500 known designs, or an average of four a week. According to art historian Allen Hockley, "Koryūsai may ... have been the most productive artist of the eighteenth century".
The series Models for Fashion: New Designs as Fresh Young Leaves (Hinagata wakana no hatsumoyō, 1776–1781) ran for 140 prints, the longest known ukiyo-e print series of beauties. He designed at least 350 hashira-e pillar prints, numerous kachō-e bird-and-flower prints, a great number of shunga erotic prints, and others. Ninety of his nikuhitsu-ga paintings are known, making him one of the most productive painters of the period.
Legacy
Despite Koryūsai's productivity and popularity—both in his time and amongst later collectors—his work has attracted little scholarship. The first ukiyo-e histories written in the West in the 19th century elevated certain artists as exemplars; Koryūsai's work came to be seen as too indebted to Harunobu, who died in 1770, and inferior to that of Kiyonaga, whose peak period came in the 1880s. An example is Woldemar von Seidlitz's Geschichte des japanischen Farbenholzschnittes ("History of Japanese colour prints", 1897), the most popular of the early ukiyo-e histories, which paints Koryūsai as a successor to Harunobu and a rival of Kiyonaga in the 1770s who slipped into mediocrity and imitation of his rival by the end of the decade.[5] Interest lay mainly in the details of Koryūsai's life—a samurai who received court honours was unusual in the proletarian world of ukiyo-e. In 2021, contemporary woodblock printmaker David Bull...
