Hoyle trained at Beckenham School of Art and the Royal College of Art. At the latter he was strongly influenced by Edward Bawden, one of Britain’s greatest linocut printers. Bawden had been commissioned by the 1951 Festival of Britain to produce a mural for the South Bank, and chose Hoyle to assist on account of his great talent. Hoyle moved to Great Bardfield in Essex, becoming a part of the Great Bardfield group of artists of whom in the post war era probably Bawden and Kenneth Rowntree are the most famous. Diverse in style, they created figurative work – in stark contrast to the abstract work of the St Ives artists at the opposite end of the country. (If he had not died whilst on active service as a war artist, off Iceland in an air-sea rescue, Eric Ravilious would have had this accolade.) The Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden was established to celebrate the works of the Great Bardfield group.

Working on snow scenes is always a challenge as there is no room for error keeping white paper unmarked. This is difficult because a lino block is almost empty, with few marks except the essential ones. In this linocut I have included a typical winter light, but the main event is the shadows changing shade and colour across the snow.

Aerial View of Cambride is a limited edition print by Clare Halifax. It is a three colour silkscreen print depicting Cambridge.
Clare Halifax graduated from the University of Loughborough in 2000 with a BA Hons in Printed Textile design and went on to sell her work internationally to the fashion and interior markets. In 2009 Clare Halifax completed an MA in Multi-disiciplinary printmaking at the University of the West of England, which saw her work develop into the production of limited edition prints and ceramic pieces. Having grown up in the South West of England, the inspiration for Clare’s work comes from the buildings that surrounded her and nostalgic reminisces of places and items of interest.
