Realist Prints and Multiples

REALIST STYLE

Realist art attempts to portray its subject matter without artifice. Similar to naturalism, authentic realist paintings and prints see an integration of true-to-life colors, meticulous detail and linear perspectives for accurate portrayals of the world.

Work that involves illusionistic techniques of realism dates back to the classical world, such as the deceptive trompe l’oeil used since ancient Greece. Art like this became especially popular in the 17th century when Dutch artists like Evert Collier painted objects that appeared real enough to touch. Realism as an artistic movement, however, usually refers to 19th-century French realist artists such as Honoré Daumier exploring social and political issues in biting lithographic prints, while the likes of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet painting people — particularly the working class — with all their imperfections, navigating everyday urban life. This was a response to the dominant academic art tradition that favored grand paintings of myth and history.

By the turn of the 20th century, European artists, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were experimenting with nearly photographic realism in their work, as seen in the attention to every botanical attribute of the flowers surrounding the drowned Ophelia painted by English artist John Everett Millais.

Although abstraction was the guiding style of 20th-century art, the realism trend in American modern art endured in Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and other artists’ depictions of the complexities of the human experience. In the late 1960s, Photorealism emerged with artists like Chuck Close and Richard Estes giving their paintings the precision of a frame of film.

Contemporary artists such as Jordan Casteel, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Aliza Nisenbaum are now using the unvarnished realist approach for honest representations of people and their worlds. Alongside traditional mediums, technology such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations are helping artists create new sensations of realism in art.

David Loggan (1634 - 1692) The University of Oxford Botanic Garden (1675) Engraving 40 x 50 cm An eighteenth-century view of one of Oxford's dreamiest spaces: the Botanic Garden, engraved by David Loggan, the noted engraver, draughtsman, and painter. The University of Oxford Botanic Garden was founded in 1621 and is the oldest botanical garden in Great Britain. Loggan's engraving focuses on its architectural qualities, with four features of the garden highlighted for their beauty, symmetry, and prowess of design. Of particular interest in this etching are the six trompe l'oeil pieces: four gently curling pieces of paper which frame the gates of the garden, and two heraldic banners borne by cherubs and sporting legends about the garden's foundation. The Danby Gate (bottom left) at the front entrance to the garden is one of the three entrances designed by Nicholas Stone...

César - Centaur - Picasso's Homage - Original Signed Etching
Located in Collonge Bellerive, Geneve, CH
César Baldaccini Original Etching Dimensions: 56.5 x 40 cm Signed and Numbered Edition of 99 It is the only original etching ever made by César. César Baldaccini was born in Marseille in 1921. At the age of 12, he left the school to help his father, cooper. At 15 years old, he studied at the Art college of Marseille. He took evening drawing teachings, and then was interested in sculpture until 1939. In 1942, César received a scholarship and went to Paris. He studied ten years at the School of Beaux-Arts; he worked in the studios of Gaumont and Alfred Jeanniot and was named “Grand Massier” (teacher) of this school. At that time, he was living in the same house as Alberto Giacometti. In 1944, short of resources, he went to Marseille, then return to Paris, next year. With the 50s, he made discovered his work through his first exhibitions. One of its works (« The fish ») obtained a place in the Museum of Modern Art in Paris (1955). Henceforth, he exhibited ceaselessly, participating in numerous “Salons” in France and abroad. César received numerous prices there. He got personal exhibitions everywhere (Japan, the United States, Holland, France, Italy, etc.). Important retrospectives came, later. In 1970, he was named professor a foreman to the School of Beaux-Arts in Paris. During his all life, Caesar was stimulated by « the love of the profession » and by an extraordinary will to innovate. The humor of the man did not miss and was noticed through his work. Pablo Picasso was his major reference, also Alberto Giacometti, Germaine Richier, Pablo Gargallo and Julio Gonzales...

Located in London, GB
David Loggan (1634-1692) St Peter's College Oxford - New Inn Hall, Aula Novi Hospitii Engraving 1675 25x36cm Baptised in Danzig in 1634 Loggan's parents were English and Scottish. Studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658) he moved to London in the late 1650s producing the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Marrying in 1663 he moved to Nuffield, Oxfordshire in 1665 to avoid the Plague and was in 1668/9 appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford Colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. Oxonia illustrata was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion he commenced work on his equivalent work for Cambridge, Cantabrigia Illustrata which was finally published in 1690 when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. Oxonia illustrata also includes an engraving of Winchester College (sharing its founder – William of Wykeham – with New College) whilst Cantabrigia illustrata includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder – Henry VIII – with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist of that era as it was not until 1783 that the first living thing (a sheep, named Montauciel ‘climb to the sky’) was sent aloft by the Mongolfier brothers in a balloon. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition (on thicker paper and with a plate number in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in smaller numbers and no second edition was produced. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne c. 1708. Edmund Hort New (1871-1931) produced a series of pen-and-ink drawings of views of Oxford that paid homage to Loggan showing the development of the city in the following two hundred years. They were turned into photoengravings by Emery...

Antique halberds etching inspired in Venice by Italian leader in printmaker
Located in Milan, IT
Le alabarde, Ref. 499 Original etching, signed and numbered. Limited edition of 90. Federica Galli was one of Italy's leading contemporary etchers. She achieved this fame because she was able to interpret views, as Milan and Venice, landscapes and architecture with a poetic and original eye. Moreover she had the foresight to portray the beauty of the great Italian trees with a cycle of sixty different platemarks. In 2021, Milan named a new street after her. Her etchings are in prestigious museums in Europe and America, as well as in many private collections. Her work is protected by a foundation with her name, based in Milan. The etching was exhibited last year in the critical retrospective that the city of Milan promoted and set up to mark the tenth anniversary of her death. Milan's municipality has named a new street to her for the occasion. The many international and accredited critics who have lingered to appreciate Galli's etchings remark on her ability to combine poetry, architectural precision and interpretative originality. Federica Galli has always been able to take a fresh look at all the landscapes and architecture on which she has cast her gaze. NMWA (National Museum of Women in Arts) in Washington conserved the complete Venezia portfolio. Also, her oeuvres are in significant Italian museum collections such as the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, (the same museum where Leonardo's Codex is conserved) and Museo of Castello Sforzesco, both in Milan; di Milano, Ala Ponzone in Cremona. Federica Galli's Biography Proudly present into Google art and Culture A prominent figure in the art of engraving in Italy, Federica Galli was born in 1932 in Soresina - a village just outside Cremona- in the north of the country. Straight after the war, in 1946, she convinced her parents to enrol her at the Artistic Lyceum in Milan. In 1950, she attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, from where she graduated four years later with a diploma in painting. She began engraving in 1954 - "Il paese dell'Alberta"- experimenting with etching, a technique she never abandoned for the rest of her life. In 1966 she married the journalist Giovanni Raimondi – editor-in-chief of the Corriere della Sera. During that time she began to embark on a densely packed programme of cultural trips that took her to the most important European cities and to countries where the art of engraving is less deeply rooted. These were also the year in which she matured the conviction that engraving was the technique in which she expressed herself most effectively and started to apply herself exclusively to this art form, producing over eight hundred different subjects. Starting from her early personal exhibitions – the first one took place in 1960 in Milan – she met with the favour of the public and critics alike. In the space of a few years, she could count on the support of some of the most authoritative critics of her time: Franco Russoli, Mario de Micheli, Giovanni Testori – who was to follow her closely until he died - Mina Gregori, Gian Alberto dell'Acqua, Roberto Tassi, Renzo Zorzi, Carlo Bo, Daniel Berger (Metropolitan Museum of New York), Gina Lagorio, Giuseppe and Francesco Frangi, Marco Fragonara, Giorgio Soavi and David Landau (Oxford University). She obtained the most prestigious institutional acknowledgements given to any contemporary artist: she was the first living artist to be invited to exhibit at the Fondazione Cini in Venice - 1987 with a collection dedicated to the lagoon city - ; at the Civic Museum of Palazzo Te in Mantua - 1987 -; at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan - 1988 - ; in the Imperial Archive of the Forbid-den City, Wag Fung gallery, - 1995 -. Collectors of her works include people of culture from Italy and elsewhere, individuals are known for their cultivated passion for the graphic arts, comprising – just to mention some of the most famous: Dino Buzzati...
