Reliquary (for Gigi) (abstract, bright colors, layers, encaustic, vessel)
By Liz Rundorff Smith
Located in New York, NY
mixed media on paper 23.25 x 19.25 inches framed Rundorff Smith deals with central shapes that she develops by referencing urns, shrines, burial mounds and places of veneration. As a current resident of South Carolina, she associates cemeteries, particularly locations in the South, as spiritual spaces of veneration. Her paintings are reliquaries for memories. Urns are vessels to hold ashes while also acknowledging life—what we mourn and what we celebrate. In the exhibition at SEFA Hudson, Rundorff Smith presents the latest in her series entitled “Trophy.” These small scale encaustic paintings are hung in a grid that mirrors the geometric patterns within each piece. The artist works in layers by melting and combining pigmented wax to create a literal history on the materials’ surface, while simultaneously implying the personal story that each vessel is meant to hold. Rendered in colored wax from sky blue to bright pink to vibrant yellow—a rectangular pattern blankets many of the paintings. This patternation references the constructions of Rundorff Smith’s father, a builder. Thus, the “Trophy” paintings...

Diptych, Oil on Linen: 'Némésis'
By David Mellen
Located in New York, NY
David Mellen's work is not easily defined, vacillating between human flesh and metaphoric representation, the paintings beg you to look deeper and to consider their physical properties. Duchamp, de Kooning, Bacon, Giacometti, Rothko are all direct influences for Mellen, yet he can not be strictly categorized as a representational or an abstract artist. Mellen paints forms reminiscent of human bodies, building them one day at a time for the duration of several months. An endless process of addition and subtraction is at work as the loosely defined figures emerge in sharp contrast with precisely executed geometric backgrounds of neutral colors. The juxtaposition between exposed canvas, well-defined geometric background and a form as the subject of the painting is a motif that has followed Mellen’s work through the years. The entities in Mellen’s work reference actions rather than concrete characters. For example, in Descent (2020) a fall from grace...

Midnight Ikat, striking geometric abstract painting, modern blue & beige palette
By Kazaan Viveiros
Located in Dallas, TX
"Midnight Ikat" is a striking modern geometric abstract painting, with a blue and navy palette. Viveiros paints directly onto panel, with a custom built wooden substrate. The sides show beautifully smoothed wood. Kazaan Viveiros has a background in architecture studies as well as fine art, and this shows in her clean and contemporary works. Artist Kazaan Viveiros earned a BA with distinction from the University of Virginia in Studio Art and Religious Studies, and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has since exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe, including solo shows in New York, San Francisco, Berkeley, Scottsdale, AZ, Richmond, VA, and Savannah, GA. In 2003, curator Raffaella Guidobono gave Viveiros a show at TAD Concept Store in Rome. Viveiros’s paintings have been collected by a wide array of corporations, including eBay and Capital One Bank, as well as by individuals such as WalMart’s Rob Walton and novelist Danielle Steel. Her large diptych, The Whale, was purchased by Banner Children’s Hospital and currently hangs in their radiology ward. Summit Medical Group MD Anderson Cancer Center in New Jersey has many of her works in their collection. In addition, five of Viveiros’s paintings were purchased by the Art in Embassies Program and are permanently installed in the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was a 2011 Bethesda Painting...
