The choice between the two heartthrobs in the new film might be simple for design lovers.

In writer-director Celine Song’s new film,The Materialists, Dakota Johnson stars as Lucy, a matchmaker in a love triangle with John and Harry, played by Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, respectively. While the former is hustling to make it as an actor, the latter is a highly successful private-equity investor with taste to spare. Harry’s Manhattan home has been the source of considerable buzz for its believable embodiment of the archetypal elegant Tribeca apartment.

In a recent interview with Curbed, production designer Anthony Gasparro and set decorator Amy Beth Silver shared the way the apartment came together. Knowing how expensive it would be to construct a space that well appointed, they found a real Tribeca pad filled with furniture that aligned with the character. A Kevin Walz for Ralph Pucci sofa stood out to Gasparro, while Silver was drawn to smaller pieces. “The lighting in there was a lot of Italian lighting and Charlotte Perriand sconces on the wall,” the set decorator told Curbed. “Nothing was advertising big-name designers, but everything in there was quite special, and expensive.”

The apartment also includes pieces from R & Company and Wyeth, plus Philippe Starck floor lamps, an Isamu Noguchi Akari UF4-L8 lamp and Vico Magistretti’s Alega lamps. Silver describes the custom headboard, which was upholstered in a Kerry Joyce fabric, as “an homage to Billy Cotton.” Whether you’re team John or team Harry, it’s clear who’s winning the decor war.
