The history of Dansk began with the American couple Ted and Martha Nierenberg. They founded the business in 1954, initially working out of the garage of their Great Neck, Long Island, home. From there, they marketed their serveware, tables, decorative objects and other products largely in the United States. They had a secret weapon: Jens Quistgaard.

After demonstrating artistic talent at a young age, the Copenhagen native was gifted a forge and anvil so that he could work in his mother's kitchen. Later, Quistgaard spent years learning from local artisans how to produce wood, metal, ceramic and glass models. His career path solidified during his apprenticeship as a silversmith with the legendary Danish silver firm Georg Jensen.

The Nierenbergs discovered the sculptor and designer on their honeymoon, which they'd spent in Europe searching for top-quality goods that might form the basis of a business. After they hired Quistgaard and launched Dansk, their products swiftly came to epitomize the best of accessible Scandinavian design for mid-century American consumers, who fell for the firm's staved-teak salad bowls, colorful casseroles and stainless-steel flatware, all of which managed to look handmade despite being mass-produced. The long-distance relationship flourished for 30 years, during which millions of Quistgaard pieces were manufactured in the company's factories. The designs for Quistgaard's Købenstyle line and other collections during the mid-1950s were revolutionary, with bowls built like barrels and charming, lightweight monochrome tableware in enameled steel.

The history of Gucci begins in 1921, when Guccio Gucci opened a leather goods shop in Florence, Italy. In 1938, he brought three of his sons (Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo) into the business and expanded it to Rome and later Milan.

In the mid-1930s, a League of Nations embargo against Italy pushed Gucci to experiment with alternatives to imported leather. Its woven hemp fabric from Naples, adorned with the brand's signature diamond print, was a hit, especially among A-list celebrities. The use of bamboo for handles and locks originated after World War II, when leather and metal were in short supply. In 1947, the founder used the incredibly durable material for the first time in his Gucci Bamboo bag. In 1953, just 15 days after opening his first store on New York's 5th Avenue, Guccio passed away at 72.

The early 1970s saw store openings in Tokyo and Hong Kong, but by the late 1980s, Gucci was floundering. Rodolfo Gucci took charge in 1982, but family drama and lawsuits ensued. In 1993, Rodolfo's son, Maurizio, transferred his shares in the company to Investcorp, ending the family's involvement in Gucci. Dawn Mello, then-president of Bergdorf Goodman, joined as creative director in 1989. But it was Tom Ford, who took over as creative director in 1994, who ultimately revived the brand.

The new millennium brought new ownership and a more toned-down vision from Frida Giannini, who became sole creative director in 2006. Alessandro Michele was named creative director in 2015, and the storied brand took a giant leap forward. Michele exited Gucci in 2022 and was eventually replaced by Sabato De Sarno.

On 1stDibs, shop vintage Gucci bags, clothing and accessories.

The history of Kartell starts with an Italian chemical engineer named Giulio Castelli and his wife, Anna Ferrieri. The couple founded Kartell in Milan as an industrial design firm, producing utilitarian items like ski racks for automobiles and laboratory equipment designed to replace breakable glass with sturdy plastic. Even as companies like Olivetti and Vespa were making Italian design popular in the 1950s, typewriters and scooters were relatively costly, and Castelli and Ferrieri wanted to provide Italian consumers with affordable, stylish goods. They launched a housewares division of Kartell in 1953, making lighting fixtures and kitchen tools and accessories from colorful molded plastic. Buoyed by its success in the home goods market, Kartell introduced its Habitat division in 1963. Kartell achieved international recognition for its innovative work in 1972, when a landmark exhibition curated by Emilio Ambasz called "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" opened at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Castelli and Ferrieri sold Kartell to Claudio Luti, their son-in-law, in 1988, and since then, Luti has expanded the company's roster of designers. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of Kartell furniture.

The history of DeLaneau watches can be traced back to Biel, Switzerland. Rolf and Yolanda Tschudin established the company in 1949 with the principle of providing outstanding timepieces for women. In the ensuing decades, the company moved toward a more modern approach, favoring sophisticated and unconventional designs. The company, which largely produces what are known as jewelry watches, earned the title "Jeweler of Watches.” In 2001, DeLaneau moved to Geneva, opened its own enameling atelier and expanded its design capabilities. In 2004, it collaborated with famed manufacturer Christophe Claret to launch its tourbillon complication for women's watches and debuted three-dimensional dial structures in 2006. In 2010, DeLaneau opened a boutique in Geneva. A few years later, the brand was awarded the Prix de la Montre Dame at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The history of Hampden watches starts in 1866. That's when Donald J. Mozart established the Mozart Watch Company in Providence, Rhode Island. A year later, he renamed his business the New York Watch Company and moved his workshop to Springfield, Massachusetts. The history of Fratelli Toso begins in 1854, when the six Toso brothers and their father, Pietro, founded a glassworks on the island of Murano in Italy. Early on, the company focused on producing practical glassware, such as apothecary jars. However, within 10 years, it was producing more ornamental pieces like chandeliers. Following Pietro's death in 1862, his sons took control of the business. In the early 20th century, the glassworks started to focus on manufacturing art glass, selling under the name Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso. During World War I, the company temporarily relocated to Liverno and then resumed operations in Murano in 1924. Later in the 20th century, Pietro's sons assumed ownership of the company. After facing economic hardships and internal disputes in the 1970s, the company was divided into Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso and Fratelli Toso International. The latter company closed in 1981 due to bankruptcy, but Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso continues to produce Murano glass today under the guidance of Pietro's descendants. The history of Art Deco begins in the early 20th century.

Art Deco emerged as a global design style around the start of World War I, during the last years of Art Nouveau's popularity. The style conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. Its hallmarks include the use of geometric designs influenced by Cubism. Major discoveries of Egyptian tombs during the era also influenced the movement.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition, the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925. After World War II, tastes shifted toward more functional, less ornate modernism, but today, the Art Deco style is still favored for its luxurious sophistication. The history of the cantilever chair dates back to 1926. It was then that Mart Stam created a sketch of a new idea for a chair on the back of a dinner napkin at a cocktail party. His drawing inspired Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to create his own version of the chair. This led to a legal battle between the two. Other designers, such as Marcel Breuer, began experimenting with the cantilever design, and today, many manufacturers continue to employ the cantilever design in their pieces. The history of Dresden Porcelain began with the founding of Sächsische Porzellanmanufaktur Dresden by Carl-Johann Gottlob Thieme in 1872 in the city of Freital, Saxony. During the decades that followed, his son-in-law Carl August Kuntzsch joined the company and pioneered the process of adding ornate floral ornamentation to porcelain. When Thieme died in 1912, Kuntzsch took up the reins of Dresden Porcelain. The company saw a decline during World War I and II. During the period after the Second World War, the Soviet Union gradually assumed control of Dresden Porcelain, renaming it VEB Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur Dresden. The reunification of Germany in 1990 allowed the company to return to private ownership. A French investor group purchased it in 1991 and then sold it to the Dresden IPV group, led by art patron Jürgen Wegener, in 1993. Gunther Seifert and Klaus-Peter Arnold bought out the group following its bankruptcy in 1998, only to resell it to Geschwister Hillebrand GmbH in 2005. The history of Kartell furniture begins with Italian chemical engineer Giulio Castelli and his wife, Anna Ferrieri. They founded the company in 1949 as an industrial design firm, producing items like ski racks for automobiles and laboratory equipment designed to replace breakable glass with sturdy plastic. They launched a housewares division of Kartell in 1953, making lighting fixtures, kitchen tools and accessories from colorful molded plastic. The affordability and infinite range of styles and hues won devotees of Kartell’s ingenious designs for juicers, dustpans and dish racks. Kartell designer Gino Colombini was responsible for many of these early products, including the KS 1146 Bucket, which won the Compasso d’Oro prize in 1955. Buoyed by its success in the home goods market, Kartell introduced its Habitat division in 1963. In 1972, Kartell achieved international recognition for its innovative work when a landmark exhibition curated by Emilio Ambasz called “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” opened at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In 1988, Castelli and Ferrieri sold Kartell to Claudio Luti, their son-in-law, who has expanded the company’s roster of designers. Shop a collection of Kartell furniture on 1stDibs.

The history of Garrard watches began with master silversmith George Wickes, who founded the company in 1735 and quickly gained a regal platform with patronage from Frederick, Prince of Wales. The history of watch straps begins with the introduction of wristwatches during the 19th century. Early watches featured metal bands secured by pins or rivets that fit into drilled holes. By the late 19th century, watchmakers had discovered genuine leather to be a comfortable, more flexible alternative to metal, especially for soldiers who needed timepieces to wear on the battlefield. Gradually, throughout the early 20th century, this innovation became common in watches intended for civilians as well. During the 1930s, some designers revisited the concept of the all-metal watch, devising a slimmer, easier-to-fasten metal bracelet. As consumers became interested in metal watches, makers developed stretchy mesh expansion bands that eliminated the need for size adjustments. Then 1973 brought the advent of the NATO strap, a heavy-duty canvas band originally designed for the British military that would become popular for all types of watches. The scuba-diving craze of the 1990s led to the development of rubber watch straps that could withstand the effects of water better than leather. Watch designers have continued experimenting with new materials, such as straps crafted out of Perlon, a type of braided nylon, carbon fiber, silicone and more.
