About the Item
This matched pair of Nuu-chah-nulth model poles each feature thunderbirds, wolves, lightning snakes and eagles. The poles are nearly identical and vary only in minute details and color choices. The thunderbirds surmounting each pole have wings individually pegged-in, giving the poles a much more physical, sculptural feel. The wolves beneath the thunderbirds are holding what appears to be lightning snakes and have eagles nestled between their legs. Each pole is painted in several bright colors that have mellowed with age and create a wonderful patinated surface. The poles would have been carved in the 1920s on Vancouver Island by a Nuu-chah-nulth artist, perhaps someone who was from the Mowachaht Nation. Since the poles have been together all these years, they are being sold as a pair.
Period: circa 1920s
Origin: Vancouver, BC
Size: 16" H x 11" W.
