Cassina Furniture

Italian

Furniture manufacturer Cassina is a prolific design house for more reasons than one: It not only owns the licenses to an exquisite collection of iconic chairs, sofas, tables and other pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries but also produces original works that are characterized by innovation and the finest Italian craftsmanship.

Cassina’s illustrious legacy includes being one of the first companies to bring industrial design to Italy in the 1950s. Founded in 1927 in Meda, Italy, by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, the Italian manufacturing giant originally specialized in bespoke woodworking. In nearly a century since its founding, the company has shown incredible foresight about design trends and the evolution of technology.

In 1964, Cassina signed an exclusive licensing agreement to manufacture furniture by Le Corbusier and his collaborators — such as the LC4 chaise longue made with trailblazing French modernist Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret — a move that would shape the future of the company. Cassina’s I Maestri collection is an ongoing initiative to restyle landmark designs from the 20th century, such as pieces by Gerrit Rietveld (the Red and Blue armchair from 1918), Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Franco Albini and Frank Lloyd Wright. The company preserves the intentions and original styles of their designs but adds updated techniques, materials and processes — rendering them the best possible combination of past, present and future. The brand has also worked with contemporary icons like Zaha Hadid, Gio Ponti and Philippe Starck.

Cassina’s original designs are cutting-edge as well. They include pieces for everyday use, the development of which is guided by comfort and the marriage of Italian craftsmanship with industrial technology.

Some of Cassina’s pieces, both from its contemporary and I Maestri collections, can be found in the collections of museums like the Museum of Modern Art and the Vitra Design Museum. In 2014, the company became part of Haworth in its acquisition of Italian furniture group Poltrona Frau, and in 2015, Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola joined Cassina as its art director, leading the brand into its next century of inventive style.

Set of Four CAB 412 Chairs by Mario Bellini for Cassina in Black Leather, 1970s
By Cassina, Mario Bellini
Located in Brescia, Brescia
A set of four Italian design icons in black saddle leather. When first produced in 1977, the CAB was the first chair to feature a free-standing leather structure, inspired by how human skin fits over our skeleton. The leather upholstery is constructed from sixteen pieces of saddle leather, which are individually die-cut and sewn together. The leather is then zippered over the tubular steel frame and the polyurethane foam padded...

Afra & Tobia Scarpa Black Leather 121 Dining Chair for Cassina, 1967, Set of 10
By Afra & Tobia Scarpa, Cassina
Located in Vicenza, IT
Set of ten Model 121 dining chairs, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa and produced by the Italian manufacturer Cassina in 1967. They feature black leather upholstery and a walnut structure. Fully restored in Italy. Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed the 121 chair in 1965. A sketch from 1943 made by Carlo Scarpa (Tobia’s father) inspired its shape. Two thin plywood “petals” compose the seat and the backrest. They are available with leather upholstery or aniline-dyed. The back has cut in the lower part, required due to a reinforcement that reacts to torsion stress, which is strongest at this point. Furthermore, the basis is a solid wood double trestle. Eight screws link...

Le Corbusier, Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand LC3 Outdoor Collection by Cassina
By Cassina, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand Cassina
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Armchair designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand in 1928. Relaunched in 2019. Manufactured by Cassina in Italy. The LC3 armchair marked the separation of the metal frame from the upholstery, reflecting Modernist architecture theory, where the support load-bearing structure of the building was separated from the rest. In this case, four discrete cushions are set inside a cage of painted or chrome-finished steel tubes. The same device is adopted for all the other pieces in the collection, from the armchair with an arm-rest on one side only or on both, to the two- or three seater sofas. Over a period of many years, Cassina worked closely with Charlotte Perriand, her heir, as well as with the Fondation Le Corbusier reinterpreting the original design while respecting its original intent, to bring new versions and finishes of this furniture to market. The LC3 Outdoor...

Questions About Cassina Furniture
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024
The difference between antique and antic is that the words have completely different meanings, even though they look similar. Antique is the term for items that are more than 100 years old. You may see it used as a noun or an adjective. On the other hand, an antic is an outrageous prank or joke, usually performed for comic effect. Anything between 20 and 99 years old is vintage, while things produced in the last 20 years are contemporary. Retro means that something looks like it's from another era. To identify old furniture, search inconspicuous areas for maker's marks. Look under seats and tabletops, inside and underneath drawers, on bases and backs and in other hidden areas. Most vintage and many antique furnishings will feature some type of marking, which you can look up using trusted online resources to determine who produced them. When no maker's mark is present, experts recommend consulting a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of antique and vintage furniture.

What 1920s furniture is called depends on its style. However, the most prominent design style of the decade was Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship. Art Deco furniture often featured bold geometric lines, floral forms, shimmering mirrored finishes, sleek metal accents, and the use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of Art Deco furniture.

Antique is usually defined as being over 100 years old. Vintage is a bit more subjective, with some saying anything over 20 years old is vintage, while others state something must be over 50 years old to be considered vintage.
