Cassina Furniture

Italian

Furniture manufacturer Cassina is a prolific design house for more reasons than one: It not only owns the licenses to an exquisite collection of iconic chairs, sofas, tables and other pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries but also produces original works that are characterized by innovation and the finest Italian craftsmanship.

Cassina’s illustrious legacy includes being one of the first companies to bring industrial design to Italy in the 1950s. Founded in 1927 in Meda, Italy, by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, the Italian manufacturing giant originally specialized in bespoke woodworking. In nearly a century since its founding, the company has shown incredible foresight about design trends and the evolution of technology.

In 1964, Cassina signed an exclusive licensing agreement to manufacture furniture by Le Corbusier and his collaborators — such as the LC4 chaise longue made with trailblazing French modernist Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret — a move that would shape the future of the company. Cassina’s I Maestri collection is an ongoing initiative to restyle landmark designs from the 20th century, such as pieces by Gerrit Rietveld (the Red and Blue armchair from 1918), Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Franco Albini and Frank Lloyd Wright. The company preserves the intentions and original styles of their designs but adds updated techniques, materials and processes — rendering them the best possible combination of past, present and future. The brand has also worked with contemporary icons like Zaha Hadid, Gio Ponti and Philippe Starck.

Cassina’s original designs are cutting-edge as well. They include pieces for everyday use, the development of which is guided by comfort and the marriage of Italian craftsmanship with industrial technology.

Some of Cassina’s pieces, both from its contemporary and I Maestri collections, can be found in the collections of museums like the Museum of Modern Art and the Vitra Design Museum. In 2014, the company became part of Haworth in its acquisition of Italian furniture group Poltrona Frau, and in 2015, Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola joined Cassina as its art director, leading the brand into its next century of inventive style.

Charlotte Perriand Tokyo Chaise Longue by Cassina
By Charlotte Perriand, Cassina
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Chaise Longue designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1940. Relaunched by Cassina in 2011. Manufactured by Cassina in Italy. It is through this veritable piece of design history that Cassina expresses its exceptional wood-working mastery. Designed, but not realised, in 1940, by Charlotte Perriand during her time in Tokyo, this chair uses bamboo to revisit the famous LC4 chaise-longue. Its organic form, curvy and inviting, has been re-issued and is now available in teak, and well as bamboo wood. The seat of this recliner is made of twelve curved strips of wood while the joining elements are satin-finish brass studs. Adding mattresses for outdoor use provides dashes of colour to help furnish a veranda, terrace, or any other kind of outdoor space. A piece of design history that conveys Cassina’s exceptionally fine wood craftsmanship. A chaise longue with a sinuous, welcoming, organic shape, originally made from bamboo. An innovative project from 1940, put into production in 2011, crafted by Charlotte Perriand during her stay in Japan as a re-imagining of the LC4 based...

Cassina Bollicosa Nautilus Outdoor Lamp For Cassina
By Cassina
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Cassina Bollicosa Nautilus Outdoor Lamp For Cassina The Bollicosa Nautilus outdoor lamp is similar to the Bollicosa indoor glass sphere, with the typical surface bubbles found in blown glass; the natural irregularities in the glass lend a rough feel, enhancing its 3-D sensation with what to the naked eye appears as a fossilized stone effect. The lamp is suspended in a neutral color cord net with knots in contrasting color, reminiscent of the hand-woven cord in the Cassina outdoor collection. In two sizes 30 cm Ø or 50 cm Ø, with clear smoked glass and knots in different colors. MATERIALS Frame in liquid-painted metal for outdoor use, body in blown glass, cord. ASSEMBLY Suspension. Bollicosa Nautilus has the same blown glass sphere as the Bollicosa indoor with the distinctive bubbly surface caused by the artisan blowing process; the natural irregularities make the material rough and matt and imbue it with a 3D quality that gives it the appearance of a fossilised stone to the naked eye. The outdoor version envelopes the diffuser with a neutral-coloured polypropylene cord net, with knots in contrasting colours, which recalls the hand weaves of the furniture in the Cassina outdoor collection. In two sizes, ∅ 30 cm or ∅ 50 cm, with fumé transparent glass with green knots...

Crate Chair by Gerrit Rietveld, Designed in 1930s The Netherlands
By Cassina, Gerrit Rietveld
Located in Hellouw, NL
Nice Gerrit Rietveld 'Crate' chair. This chair is designed in 1934, however, we think this is a Cassina edition from the 1970s. This chair is made out of ash wood and has a colorless lacquer. 'Gerrit Rietveld designed the 'crate' series of furniture built from standardized pine boards – cheap material for packing crates – which were soon well-known as ‘crate furniture’. 'From 1935 on the progressive designs appeared at Metz & Co, where furniture by Rietveld had already been sold since 1930. The crate desk...

Anything between 20 and 99 years old is vintage, while things produced in the last 20 years are contemporary. Retro means that something looks like it's from another era. To identify old furniture, search inconspicuous areas for maker's marks. Look under seats and tabletops, inside and underneath drawers, on bases and backs and in other hidden areas. Most vintage and many antique furnishings will feature some type of marking, which you can look up using trusted online resources to determine who produced them. When no maker's mark is present, experts recommend consulting a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of antique and vintage furniture.

What 1920s furniture is called depends on its style. However, the most prominent design style of the decade was Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship. Art Deco furniture often featured bold geometric lines, floral forms, shimmering mirrored finishes, sleek metal accents, and the use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of Art Deco furniture.

Antique is usually defined as being over 100 years old. Vintage is a bit more subjective, with some saying anything over 20 years old is vintage, while others state something must be over 50 years old to be considered vintage.

Antique furniture can be worth quite a lot, particularly if it is in good quality. The rarer the piece, the higher the value.

You may find it on the bottom or back of your furniture or inside a drawer or cabinet. Once you have located the marking, you can snap a photo of it and use a reverse image search to try and identify the maker. Or, you can type a description of the mark into a search engine.
