This is a spectacular museum quality antique Edwardian 43 Carat Black Star Sapphire and Seed Pearl Garland Suite. The suite comprising a necklace, bracelet and earrings each with black star sapphires, which total approximately 43 Carat total weight. The gorgeous black star sapphires and pearls are set in 10 Karat Yellow Gold in a motif of foliate vines tied by ribbon bows. The suite of jewels represents extraordinary design in the pantheon of Victorian - Edwardian garland motif jewels. The suite dates to the Edwardian Period, circa 1905.
Provenance: The jewels are from the estate of Muriel Gluck, the esteemed patron and philanthropist of the arts in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. From her Los Angeles Times obituary: "Muriel Gluck, a philanthropist who gave millions of dollars to support the arts and education, primarily in Los Angeles and San Diego. From the early years of her marriage to retail magnate and race horse breeder Maxwell H. Gluck in the late 1940s, she was an art collector who also appreciated classical music. The couple established the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation. This is a rare museum quality early Rose Cut Diamond Pendant dating to the Georgian Era set with an abundance of antique Rose Cut Diamonds set in silver atop 14 Karat gold as was the custom of the period. The pendant of great beauty and dating to the 1700s.
Diamonds were all the rage in the Georgian period and this is a wonderful example. Early pieces such as this are extremely difficult to find. This one is so immensely wearable as the size is just perfect for wearing either day or night. It has stunning period character and style.
The pendant is 68 mm (2 3/4 inches) long from the top of the bale to the bottom of the pendant. Without the bale it is 58 mm long. It is 45 mm (1 3/4 inches) wide at the widest point.
The rose cut diamonds are set in silver collets atop 14 Karat gold.
The gold bale is a later addition.
There has been some restoration of the pendant as is visible from the back - this is very typical of the early Georgian jewels...

Rare Japan Shakudo Snake Ring 14 Karat Gold Antique Victorian Samurai circa 1870

This is a very rare ring depicting a snake traveling through the grass in the historic Japanese art form of Shakudo, in 14 Karat Gold. The Shakudo pieces originated in the Samurai period in Japan and were created by esteemed artists who made ornaments to adorn swords and armor. When the Samurai period ended, these artists moved to making wearable art during the period of the 1870s - 1900.
Here we have a very rare Shakudo piece of a snake traveling through grass. Notice the grace of the proportion of the images and the Japanese esthetic of asymmetry. The mixed metals Shakudo plaque is set in 14 Karat Gold.
In the Victorian era the snake was the symbol of eternal love. It has come to symbolize sexuality, rebirth and wisdom.
Snake jewelry is highly desirable and collected today.
