Doris Cliff Egyptian Revival Scarab Earrings Brooch Sterling Silver Faience
About the Item
This is a very rare Museum Quality Parure of Scarab Earrings and Brooch. The jewels are Egyptian Revival masterpieces by the acclaimed artist Doris Cliff (1885-1968) of Chicago. The earrings and brooch are hand wrought in Sterling Silver with green faience scarabs. The scarabs are just stunning and the silver work creating the wings is exquisite. I believe these were done during the Arts & Crafts period, in the early part of the 20th Century.
For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. With the discoveries of Egyptian tombs, and the treasures within, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the exotically opulent lives of the Pharaohs were beyond anyone’s imagination. Of all the precious objects unearthed in the tombs, the lavish jewels were perhaps the most fascinating for their extravagance and never-before-seen symbolism. Artisans embraced the vivid contrasting colors, motifs, and symbols more daringly than ever before. Whether the jewels were complete, faithful reproductions or real artifacts preciously decorated in similar style, the Egyptian Revival jewelry is lavish and magnificent.
The brooch is 2 3/4 inches wide, by 2 inches tall, and weighs 18.6 grams.
The earrings are 1 1/8 inches tall by 1 1/4 inches wide, and weigh 11.7 grams. They have lever-backs with screw back adjustments.
The pieces are hallmarked Doris Cliff Handwrought Sterling.
