This is a rare antique Egyptian Revival Hand Carved Coral Victorian Scarab Beetle Insect Brooch Pin in 9 Karat Gold. The stunning three dimensional scarab beetle bug insect is carved from a monumental piece of natural Coral. The form and shape of the beetle are absolutely fantastic and the insect glows with the natural wonder provided by the gorgeous natural coral. The jewel is the creation of a master artisan who was able to create the life size three dimensional scarab with fabulous life like details. The wonderful face, eyes, horn and shells of the beetle are exquisite. Scarab Beetles The Scarab Beetle has been an extremely popular motif in jewelry throughout history since the time of ancient Egypt. It embodies the concept of existence, development, and growth, and was seen as a form of protection. The Victorians were fascinated with nature and particularly insects and their insect creations are incredible feats of jewelry making. This one is extremely rare with its large size created by natural coral and its fabulous three dimensional design. This whimsical mystical insect dances delightfully across the body and creates a conversation piece to be passed on for generations. And insect inspired jewels are all the rage today. These antique insect gems are among the most highly desired and collected today. The brooch dates to circa 1820-1900. The brooch can be easily converted to a pendant necklace if desired. Egyptian Revival During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and brought on what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s onward, and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics. The insect brooch is 1 1/4 inches (31mm) long. It is 1 inch (26mm) wide. The coral is 10mm tall. The brooch weighs 10.9 grams. The brooch is 9 Karat Gold The brooch could be easily converted to a pendant if desired.
