Mid-19th Century American Stationary with Manuscript Letter, Signed 1854
Located in Langweer, NL
American stationery with in the top the following text printed: E pluribus unum – Latin for "Out of many, one" (also translated as "One out of many" or "One from many") – is a traditional motto of the United States, appearing on the Great Seal along with Annuit cœptis (Latin for "he approves the undertaking [lit. 'things undertaken']") and Novus ordo seclorum (Latin for "New order of the ages"); its inclusion on the seal was approved by an Act of Congress in 1782. While its status as national motto was for many years unofficial, E pluribus unum was still considered the de facto motto of the United States from its early history. Eventually, the United States Congress passed an act (H. J. Resolution 396), adopting "In God We Trust" as the official motto in 1956. The thirteen letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM makes its use symbolic of the thirteen original states like the thirteen stripes on the US flag. The meaning of the phrase originates from the concept that out of the union of the original Thirteen Colonies emerged a new single nation. It is emblazoned across the scroll and clenched in the eagle's beak on the Great Seal of the United States. (Source: wikipedia) Text below the portraits: "The Presidents of our Great Republic." Letter paper with hand-colored engraving showing the portraits of the 14 presidents of the USA from George Washington up to Franklin Pierce...

Beautiful Large Scale Map of Spain and Portugal Published by Herman Moll in 1711
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: A New and Exact Map of Spain & Portugal Author: Herman Moll Date: 1711 Medium: Hand-colored copperplate engraving Herman Moll (c. 1654-1732) was one of the most important London mapmakers in the first half of the eighteenth century. Moll was probably born in Bremen, Germany, around 1654. He moved to London to escape the Scanian Wars. His earliest work was as an engraver for Moses Pitt on the production of the English Atlas, a failed work which landed Pitt in debtor's prison. Moll also engraved for Sir Jonas Moore, Grenville Collins, John Adair, and the Seller & Price firm. He published his first original maps in the early 1680s and had set up his own shop by the 1690s. Moll's work quickly helped him become a member of a group which congregated at Jonathan's Coffee House at Number 20 Exchange Alley, Cornhill, where speculators met to trade stock. Moll's circle included the scientist Robert Hooke...

Important and Scarce Antique Map of Asia from Jesuit Sources, C.1713
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique map titled 'L'Asie selon les nouvelles observations de Messrs de l'Academie des Sciences etc'. The main focus of this important and scarce map of Asia is the delineation of the northeast part of the continent from Jesuit sources. The northeast coast is severely truncated with the discoveries of Nicolas Witsen shown, and the partial coastlines of Jesso and Compagnies Land are depicted to the north of Japan. Inset in the North Pacific is a map of that same region based on the information from Father Martino Martini. It shows Jesso connected to the mainland with a narrow strait between it and a huge Compagnies Land. An inset below, taken from Father Ferdinand Verbiest, illustrates the road between Peking and Kirin and Nincrita. Father Verbiest's world map of 1674, which he compiled for the Chinese, subsequently led to the Jesuits obtaining a commission to make a comprehensive topographical...

Cortesi's Masterpiece: A Comprehensive and Authoritative Map of Uruguay, 1903
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique map titled 'Mapa de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay'. Large and detailed folding map of Uruguay. This monumental map depicts all of Uruguay with unprecedented accuracy and detail. Impressively, it serves the multiple roles of being an advanced topographic, economic and political map, as well as being a meticulous sea chart of the Rio de la Plata and the adjacent waters of the Atlantic. The republic's 20 departments are defined in various colors, while a legend, 'Referencias' identifies symbols representing the locations of departmental capitals, town, roads, railways, public schools and lighthouses, amongst other details. Every single river and stream is delineated and named and the ridges of hills are delicately expressed. The map features four insets, including a large map of the capital, Montevideo, as well as maps of Colonia, Maldonado and Punta del Este and the Island of Flores. The hydrographical information provided is truly profound, and renders the map fit for use in maritime commerce. In 1901, the Uruguayan House of Representatives commissioned the geographer Saturnino Cortesi to employ the most progressive geographical sources, both military and civilian, to devise an authoritative national map of the republic. Cortesi clearly had access to a vast archive of topographical surveys...

Colonial Cartography: The Banda Islands - the Epicenter of the Spice Trade, 1818
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique map titled 'Kaart der Bandasche Eilanden' with a view titled 'Gezigt van het Eiland Neira en de Goening Api'. Rare and attractive map of the Banda Islands with a large view of Banda Neira and Gunung Api. One of 12 maps from ‘Atlas van Overzeesche bezittingen’ (Atlas of Oversea Possessions) by J.S. van den Bosch. J.S. van den Bosch (1780 – 1844), Major General, Knight of the 3rd Class of the Military William Order. It is a rare and visually appealing representation of the Banda Islands, a group of ten small volcanic islands in the Banda Sea, part of present-day Indonesia. The map is one of twelve from the “Atlas van Overzeesche bezittingen” (Atlas of Overseas Possessions) by J.S. van den Bosch, who was a Major General and a Knight of the Military William Order. Johannes van den Bosch, who lived from 1780 to 1844, had a significant military and administrative career, including serving as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. His works and collections are reflective of the Dutch colonial interest and administration in the region. The Banda Islands, depicted in this map, are particularly famous for being the sole source of nutmeg and mace before the mid-19th century. Nutmeg was highly valued in European cuisine, as a preservative, and as a medicine. The monopoly on these spices made the Banda Islands extremely important during the age of spice trade, which also led to intense colonial competition and conflict, notably between the Dutch and the British. The map itself provides a detailed topographical representation of the Banda Islands, possibly with depth soundings and navigational hazards indicated, which would have been essential information for the ships of the Dutch East India Company and other seafarers. The large view of Banda Neira and Gunung Api (literally "Fire Mountain...

Guadeloupe and Dependencies: Mid-19th Century Map from France Pittoresque Series
Located in Langweer, NL
This map titled "Guadeloupe et Dépendances" is part of the France Pittoresque series and provides a detailed view of the island of Guadeloupe and its surrounding dependencies. Features: - The map shows the two main landmasses of Guadeloupe: Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, separated by a narrow channel. - Several smaller islands, including Marie-Galante, Les Saintes, and La Désirade, are also depicted. - The main cities, towns, and geographical features are labeled, with emphasis on the island's mountain ranges and rivers, particularly on Basse-Terre. - An inset at the bottom right provides a detailed plan of Pointe-à-Pitre, a major city and port on the island. The grid layout of the streets is clearly shown, reflecting urban planning of the time. Artistic and Cartographic Details: - The map uses clear linework to differentiate between the different islands and the sea, with significant natural features such as mountains and rivers carefully depicted. - The map was drawn by Monin and engraved by Jacqueline and Barrière, whose names appear in the lower right corner. - The scale in the lower left corner is measured in leagues, showing distances both by land and sea. Historical Context: - This map likely dates to the mid-19th century, a period when Guadeloupe was a key French colony in the Caribbean. Guadeloupe was known for its sugar and coffee plantations, which played a significant role in France's colonial economy. - Maps like this were often used for administrative, military, and educational purposes to give a comprehensive view of France's overseas territories. The map of Guadeloupe et Dépendances from the France Pittoresque series likely dates to the mid-19th century, around 1840 to 1860. This period corresponds to the height of French colonial influence in Guadeloupe, and the map's style, detailed urban planning, and cartographic techniques are consistent with maps produced in that era. The specific publication date could be further narrowed down if the map was part of a known edition of the France Pittoresque atlas, but based on the cartographic style and historical context, 1840–1860 is a reasonable estimate. Here are some relevant keywords people might use when searching for a map of Guadeloupe and its surrounding areas: 1. Guadeloupe map 2. Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre map 3. Newfoundland and St. Pierre & Miquelon: Uncoloured French Map of circa 1820
Located in Langweer, NL
The map is titled "Île et Banc de Terre-Neuve avec les Îles St. Pierre et Miquelon", depicting Newfoundland and the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. It is from the Petit Atlas National series. Features: - The map is divided into two sections: 1. The left side shows Newfoundland (Terre-Neuve) and its surrounding waters, including important locations such as the Île du Cap Breton and Grand Bank fishing areas. 2. The right side focuses on St. Pierre and Miquelon, a French overseas territory near Newfoundland. - Administrative divisions and key geographic features, such as capes, bays, and towns, are labeled on the map. Historical Context: - This map is part of a collection meant to showcase France's overseas colonies and territories, including the small but significant St. Pierre and Miquelon, which has been under French control for centuries and was a critical fishing and trading hub. - The Petit Atlas National series was typically published in the early 19th century, and this map likely dates from the same period, around 1815–1820. Here the text transalated: Here is the translation of the text from French to English: --- **NOTICE.** The islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, the only remaining French possession in this part of America since the loss of Canada, are located a few miles from the southern coast of Newfoundland, which belongs to the English. Their relatively fertile soil is broken up by hills that give rise to small streams. **Grande Miquelon**, the northernmost of the two islands, has a circumference of about 9 to 10 leagues. It offers a convenient port for fishing boats. **Petite Miquelon**, to the south of Grande Miquelon, has a circumference of about 6 leagues. It is well-watered and well-wooded. **Saint Pierre**, to the south-southwest of the two other islands, presents a somewhat similar appearance but is devoid of trees. Although it is the smallest of the three islands, it is the most important due to the size of its harbor, which can accommodate 30 to 40 ships of various sizes, and because of its favorable coastline for the preparation, preservation, and export of cod. On its eastern coast, at the bottom of a beautiful bay, lies the town of Saint Pierre, the only notable settlement on the three islands. It is the residence of a naval officer who, under the title of Commander, governs the colony. The permanent population is about 2,000 souls, of which 800 reside in Saint Pierre. However, sailors come to the islands from the coasts of Brittany and Normandy during the cod fishing season on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1833, it was estimated that about 14,000 sailors were employed in this fishery, and the purchase of supplies required by the colony was valued at over one million francs. --- This translation reflects the original notice describing the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, with details about their geography, population, and economic activities related to the fishing industry. People searching for maps or information about Newfoundland and the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon use the following keywords: 1. Newfoundland map...

- Hand-colored outlines mark the territories, with color distinctions for the different islands. - Administrative divisions and key geographic features, such as capes, bays, and towns, are labeled on the map. Here the text translated: Here is the translation of the text from French to English: **NOTICE.** The islands of St.
