Lewis was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia in 1881 but migrated to the United States in 1900. After working in San Francisco and New York he then traveled to Japan to study Japanese art for two years. Lewis eventually returned to the US and settled back in New York in the early 1920s where he would experience his most artistically productive breakthrough period (between 1925-1935) in which he would create some of his most well-known works including this piece. Today, Lewis is universally considered to be one of the most important American printmakers of the twentieth century - a master of light and shadow.
This work is a drypoint etching, printed in black ink on cream wove paper with full margins. A brilliant, luminous, and richly-inked impression. From a noted (McCarron, Paul. The Prints of Martin Lewis: A Catalogue Raisonne, p. 60) edition of 40 recorded impressions. According to McCarron, this is the most accomplished of Lewis' Japan prints: "New Year''s Day is an important holiday in Japan. This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner.
The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A very large and wonderfully detailed screen print by Asian/ Japanese American artist Masami Teraoka titled "New Views of Mt. Fuji: Sinking Pleasure Boat" is based on his original 1976-77 painting by the same name.
The print is numbered in pencil at the lower edge (63/75), blind-stamped and dated (1977) at the upper right, sealed by Teraoka with his personal stamps/seals within the image, and likely hand-signed on verso (we have not removed the artwork from the frame but this is most likely the case). The work was printed on Rives BFK paper by Ron McPherson and Julie McPherson, and published by Space Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.
Masami Teraoka has had over 70 solo exhibitions and he has twice been honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York. He has also received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. His works can be found in collections and museums around the world including:

Dean Jackson Meeker (born in Madison, Wisconsin, 1920-2002) was an internationally recognized sculptor, painter, and printmaker. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the University of Wisconsin. In 1958, Meeker was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for 1959 and 1960 to study printmaking in Europe. In Paris, he worked at Hayter's printmaking workshop, Atelier 17, and with printmaker Kaiko Moti while also studying in museums in Spain and Italy.

Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print, which is titled "Daitoku-ji Kyoto (D)" is from a series of Kyoto temple images that Saito created. The woodblock print features strong, contrasting colors, beautiful wood grain, and a complex design - the cross-shaped walkway pattern which is highlighted by the small precisely placed stones is repeated on the temple wall. The wood grain in the yard, temple walls and sky add another layer of compositional depth.
