About the Item
A fantastic, wonderfully designed, striking original color offset lithograph on thick wove paper exhibition poster from Keith Haring's 1983 Tony Shafrazi New York City Gallery show Into 84. The work depicts choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones' body as the canvas for Haring's artwork. Jones was a friend and collaborator of Keith Haring. The image is based on a photograph that was taken of Jones by another Haring friend and collaborator, Tseng Kwon

The piece is hand-signed by Haring in black ink along the lower edge. The poster has never been displayed or framed. It has been in storage and has not been exposed to light since the 1980s.
The poster also comes with an original Pop Shop button/pin.
Both pieces have an interesting provenance. They were acquired from a New York gentleman who is an art dealer. Back in the 1980s, he worked for a film company that was located not far from Keith Haring's Pop Shop, which opened in 1986. He frequented the shop and talked with Haring on several occasions. He picked up three posters (Haring kindly signed them for him) and a few other items. He said Haring was always willing to chat and would hand out Pop Shop Flower buttons. Haring was personally wearing the pin button we are including. It was given by Haring to the previous owner on one of his visits at a later date. Haring removed it from his shirt and handed it to him.
A beautiful and highly engaging piece with a very rare provenance. Generally considered to be Haring's most coveted exhibition poster. Would be an amazing addition to any Keith Haring or modern art collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone artwork in any setting once framed and displayed.

Keith Haring
Keith Haring began experimenting with his bold, graphic lines and cartoon-inspired figures on the walls of New York City subway stations in the early 1980s. He called them his “laboratory,” places to develop a radical new aesthetic based on an ideology of creating truly democratic public art.
Haring’s paintings, prints and murals address the universal themes of death, love and sex, as well as contemporary issues he experienced personally, like the crack-cocaine and AIDS epidemics. They derive much of their impact from the powerful contrast between these serious subjects and the joyful, vibrant pictographic language he uses to express them, full of dancing figures, babies, barking dogs, hearts and rhythmic lines, as well as references to pop culture.
To make his art even more accessible, in 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop in Soho. In a foreshadowing of today’s intermingling of art and fashion, the shop sold merchandise and novelty items featuring imagery by Haring and contemporaries like Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. While his works sometimes included text, for the most part, he chose to communicate through drawing.
“Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times,” Haring once declared. “It lives through magic.”
