French Chestnut and Oak Desk from Le Grand Monarque À Chartres, circa 1720
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved, circa 1720, using chestnut and oak woods, this desk was recently part of Le Grand Monarque hotel in Chartres, France. The desk has been stripped at some point, allowing the beautiful wood grain and round dowel construction to become focal points. The stunning desk has a shaped top with quarter round molding. A 23 ½” W seat opening is topped by a concave front drawer with a bronze drop handle affixed by a pair of rosette mounts. Similar handles can be seen on each of the four main drawers, which are surrounded by thick cavetto molding. These drawers also have a scalloped keyplate and mounts of two putti hunting dragons hidden amongst foliage. Interestingly, the sides are comprised of four rectangular panels, with the two nearest to the straight back side being functional drawers. Known as a bureau caissiers (“cashier’s desk...

Heavy Antique French Copper Turbotiere Poacher, Maison Gaillard Paris, c.1850
Located in Dallas, TX
This heavy tin-lined French copper fish poacher, known as a turbotiere, dates to circa 1850 and was produced by the well-known factory for kitchen equipment, Maison Gaillard Paris. The turbot is a flatfish found in the Atlantic Ocean and this diamond-shaped poacher was designed to accommodate the shape of the fish, hence the name turbotiere. There is a production mark beneath the rolled rim which reads “Gaillard Maison”. A second production mark (“70”) can be seen beneath one of the large looping handles that are affixed by brass mounts with three rivets. The rivets combined with the dovetail seam on the bottom of the poacher attest to the age of production, as these were methods to assemble copper pieces prior to the late-19th century. Copper serving pieces are always in high demand, making our turbotiere poacher from Gaillard Paris a must have for a kitchen decorative...

Pair of 19th C, French, Bronze Soldiers, before and After the Fight, H. Dumaige
By Etienne-Henri Dumaige
Located in Dallas, TX
Standing over 2 feet tall, these high quality bronze statues depict soldiers during the French revolutionary wars. They are labeled and signed Dumaige (French sculptor, Etienne-Henry Dumaige 1830-1888). The statues show incredible detail, excellent proportion, and retain their original, rich, brown patina, which is still in remarkable condition. Each solider has a raised brass placard on the front of the 1 ½” thick square bases: one reads Avant le combat volontaire de 1792 par Dumaige, H.C, while the other is titled “Apres le combat grenadier de 1792 par Dumaige, H.C.”. The designation “H.C.” stands for Hors concours (“standout”), which is used for artwork that is excluded from competition because it has already claimed top honors elsewhere. Avant, meaning “before” shows our soldier as a volunteer drummer. Drums were used on the battlefield not only to provide cadence for the soldiers, but also to issue orders based on the percussion pattern. Here, our soldier’s drum is attached to a harness that runs across his right shoulder. Both hands are gripping the frame of the drum, while there is a drumstick in his left hand. There is a satchel on the soldier’s back as he stands on grass with a small wood fence behind him. Our soldier has a mustache with long braided hair in the back. He is wearing a fluted bicorne with a pomme tuft and has earrings in both ears. His jacket is knee-length in the back, with tasseled epaulets on the shoulders. Apres, meaning “after”, depicts the man as a grenadier, enjoying tobacco after a conflict. The grenadier...

Set of 5 Circa 1900 Blue and White Delft Vases from Holland
Located in Dallas, TX
A beautiful set of five blue and white Delft vases, this faience collection was hand-painted in Holland, circa 1900. The three bulbous vases are lidded, each with a finial depicting a rampant lion with a ball in its forepaws. Beneath the lion is a mottled background (on the front side only), with a foliate and floral margent. Each vase has the same scene painted on the front of the main body: a couple walking through a field surrounded by flowers. The opposite side has a floral rinceaux above a foliate branch. Painted in a similar fashion, the two concave vases are without lids. The side opposite from the cartouche of the couple has floral margents. All five vases have canted corners on the base. Inspired by Italian majolica, the faience produced in 16th century Holland...

Circa 1800 Carved Oak Sculptures of the Apostles, James, John, Peter, and Paul

Hand-carved in oak, circa 1800, these sculptures depict arguably the most important apostles: James, John, Peter, and Paul. All of the figures are distinctly different, although they share some commonalities, such as they are all barefoot and clad in ankle length tunics on a rectangular base with canted corners. The set would make fantastic decorative art for a mantel, shelf, or sofa table. Wide Antique Carved Wooden Eagle from France, Circa 1810
Located in Dallas, TX
With a wingspan of five and a half feet wide, this wooden eagle has a commanding presence. Hand-carved in France, circa 1810, the eagle was crafted by a master-level woodworker. Notice how each feather has been carved with incredible detail, showing slight separations in the barbs that make up feathers. The eagle is presented with wings displayed, as if in the midst of flight. Both legs are tucked under the body, as you might see on a gliding bird. The beak is open with a large hole that runs through to the back side, possibly indicating that at one time the eagle held something in its mouth. When Napoleon became Emperor of the French in 1804, he brought about a striking shift in artwork and architecture, embracing the styles of ancient empires...

First produced in 1907 by the American silversmith company, Reed & Barton, this pair of sterling silver platters has repousse fruit motifs. Repousse is a metalwork technique where the verso (back) side is hammered to produce low relief images that can be seen when viewing the front. Curled leaves and C-scrolls seamlessly alternate along the outside of the platter to form scalloped edges. Beneath the crenelle are segmented sections (eight in total) that are adorned with alternating images of a cluster of fruit followed by a tall pinnate leaf. 17th Century Spanish Walnut Wood Table with Single Plank Top
Located in Dallas, TX
A beautifully crafted wooden table from Spain, the walnut was hand-carved at the end of the Renaissance (in the 1600’s). As is the case with most Spanish Renaissance tables, the 1 ½” thick single plank top rests upon tightly turned legs. The edges of the top do not have molding or carvings but receive added character from the large dovetail grooves that were used to construct the table. This table has framing beneath the top plank which houses three horizontally aligned drawers. Each drawer façade has an iron escutcheon in the shape of shield with two engrailed top edges. The keyplate is set within a foliate margent that is surrounded by several layers of molding. Identical carvings and iron plates can be seen on the opposite side of the table, which has faux drawer fronts. Beneath the belt are four turned legs connected by an H-stretcher. Circa 1870 Bleached Walnut Renaissance Style Commode from Florence, Italy
Located in Dallas, TX
This majestic, bleached walnut commode was hand-carved by an Italian master in Florence, circa 1870. The details of the floral rinceaux, which are dotted with high relief mascarons are of the highest craftsmanship, beautifully eliciting the Renaissance style. Each of the three full-length drawers has a cabochon coat of arms with large foliate whorls emanating from behind it. The two coils next to the central cartouche have floral centers, while the following volutes are adorned with mascaron pulls, each drawer with a different pair of faces. An overhanging top with quarter round molding sits over a crenellated border, which has a pair of small drawers beneath separated by a large lion mascaron. Both drawers have mascaron pulls set inside an acanthus rinceau. All drawers are flanked by tall vertical pilasters, embellished with a curled acanthus margent punctuated with a mascaron, diminishing roundels, fruits, and linenfold. A shaped shield with a large grotesque is inset on each side and surrounded by thin quarter round molding. The impressive commode is supported by four monopodial lion paw feet beneath a border of infilled gadroon lobes. The walnut wood has been stripped, giving the chest of drawers a warm golden cream color. Our Renaissance style Florentine commode...
