Antique French Blue and White Saint-Clément Faience Lion Candle Holder, C. 1890

About the Item

Featuring a beautiful hand-painted cobalt blue and white finish, this faience lion candle holder dates to circa 1890. Based on production marks on the back of the base, the candle holder was produced in Saint-Clément, by Keller & Guerin, which was originally a factory of the famed Luneville Studio that opened in 1728. Saint-Clément is a commune in the Grand Est of France, roughly 35 km from the major city of Nancy. This proximity is important, as the motto for Nancy, non inultus premor (loosely translated as “I cannot be touched with impunity”) appears on a scrolled coat of arms shield near the lion. Depicted as rampant guardant, the lion stands over the shield and a large, parted leaf on the textured terrain. The heraldic display features an open mural crown over a banner with the Latin motto beneath. Both forepaws are extended, holding a foliate form vase adorned with a latticework motif that serves as a sconce for a candle. Our blue and white faience lion candle holder can still be used for lighting, although it would also make a fabulous decorative accessories for a mantel, bookshelf, or small table.

  • Pair of French 17th Century Angel Candle Holders in Carved Elmwood
    Located in Dallas, TX
Standing at over two feet tall, this 17th century pair of angel candlesticks has been carved out of a beautiful French elm wood. Because elm wood typically has an interlocked grain, it can be quite difficult to carve or split. These candlesticks were produced by a master craftsman in France during the 1600s. Our angels have long, wavy hair that extends past their shoulders. They are wearing long flowing gowns with scalloped collars and half sleeves. The loosely draped robe reaches their ankles, exposing bare feet that stand upon a round base. One leg is also visible from behind the material due to a slit at mid-thigh. Each angel is holding a turned candle holder that has a large wrought iron pricket with a lobed bobeche. In France, this type of candle holder is known as an Ange Céroféraire. A ceroferary is the acolyte...

  • Pair of Hand Forged 18th Century Spanish Iron Torchere Candle Holders
    Located in Dallas, TX
Full of charm and character, this pair of iron torchere candle holders were hand-forged in Spain during the 1700s. The visible strike marks made by the blacksmith, along with the flattened pin that affixes the highly scrolled arms add subtle nuances to the 21-inch tall candlesticks. At the end of each arm is a torch-like light sconce with a banded noix at the bottom, topped by a flat bobeche with a thin rim and a folded cylindrical capital. Rising a few inches above is a third light source with an identical bobeche and capital that extends from the central column. The three-light spread is supported by tripod bases featuring sinuous legs that have been embellished by roundels set within thin fluting. Our pair of Spanish torchere...
