Circa 1750 Bleached Oak Rococo Console Table with Royal Flemish Red Marble Top

About the Item

This stunning period Louis XV Rocaille console with its original conforming marble top has been stripped at some point in its history. French wall consoles with two feet were often used in conjunction with boiseries or paneled rooms, when some furnishings were attached to the walls. The Rocaille or Rococo aesthetic was taken from nature in the form of rockwork, grotto ornaments, shells, and foliate scrollwork. Asymmetry was all pervasive but with a balancing of equal masses when applied. It began in France in the early 1700s with the leading ornament lists of the style being Meissonier and Oppenord. This French Rocaille console is extremely elegant with balanced and measured lines. The grain of the European oak boards has been situated strategically throughout the console to complement the sinuous and finely carved curvilinear motifs. The conforming marble top is original to the piece. Period Louis XV consoles of this caliber are not easily found. This one will be an elegant focal point wherever it is placed.

Console tables are beautiful, graceful tables that also serve a practical purpose. These tables are aligned against a wall, often between two windows and/or placed beneath a mirror. You might find accessories or artwork resting on the marble or wooden tops. During the Regence period, these tables would often be painted to match the colors of the wood paneling of the walls, indicating that this console table came from an opulent room. Hand-carved in Italy during the 1700’s, the wood has a lacquered white finish with gilded highlights. The rouge royal marble from Belgium has white and gray veining and light inclusions with a quarter round finish on three sides (like most consoles, the backside is typically left unpainted or raw – as this is the side that abuts the wall). Beneath the thick marble are four cabriole legs with pied-de-biche (deer’s foot...
