White marble case with stepped raised plinth with ormolu mounts and beaded decoration surmounted by an ormolu wreath and standing on decorative ormolu feet. Gilded chased bezel with bevelled glass. Enamel dial with floral decoration, Arabic numerals and original gilded hands signed ‘Comptoir General, J.Pratt, Paris, 9 Bd Poissonnies’. French eight day movement with outside countwheel and anchor escapement striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell marked for Samuel Marti. C.1880 The clock was retailed by Le Comptoir General a prestigious decorative and fine art store in France. At this time the Comptoir General was represented by J.Pratt who was located at 9, Boulvard Poissonnies. ‘Samuel Marti & Cie’ were well known French clockmakers working from their premises at Le Pays De Montbeliard Paris from just before 1860. French Porcelain Mantel clock by Raingo Freres, Paris French porcelain mantel clock housed in an arch top case with raised stepped plinth and resting on scroll feet. Outstanding hand painted panel to the front with gilt surround depicting two maidens attending a fatally wounded knight. Beautifully decorated to all sides with flowers, birds and butterfly on a white ground with gilt decorative border to the plinth. Chased gilded bezel, silvered dial with Roman numerals and original ‘blued’ steel Moonpoise hands signed Raingo Fres, a Paris. French eight day movement with silk suspension, anchor escapement and outside countwheel, striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell. The backplate signed Raingo Fres, a Paris and numbered 301. C.1850 Raingo Freres worked from Rue Vielle Du Temple c.1829, also from Rue De Saintonge between 1840 to 1850. The company continued trading in Paris until the early 1900’s. The clock to the left with cast bezel, silvered dial, Roman numerals, original steel hands, engraved to centre and signed ‘J.H.Steward, 54 Cornhill 406 and 66 Strand & 456 West Strand, London. The aneroid barometer with bevelled glass with brass cast bezel and engraved silvered dial. Five weather indications, the scale marked from 26 to 31 inches of mercury and central setting knob for the pointer. Centrally mounted spiral mercury thermometer with silvered, engraved scale for Centigrade and Fahrenheit. C.1890 ‘Barometer makers and retailers’ by Edwin Banfield lists James Henry Steward as working from various addresses in London including 406 the Stand, St Paul’s Churchyard, 54, Cornhill, etc. He was a prolific maker of all types of barometers during the second half of the nineteenth century.
