Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet by C. Collodi Illustrated by Maria L. Kirk 1920
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Collodi, Carlo. Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet. Philadelphia and London: J. B. Lippincott, [1920]. Illustrated by Maria L. Kirk. Gift Edition. In the publisher's original gray cloth boards, stamped with green and orange, illustrated cover label and top edge gilt. With 14 color plates and numerous border illustrations and decoration throughout. Presented with a new archival slipcase.
Presented is a charming English edition of Carlo Collodi’s children’s tale, Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet. This book was published in Philadelphia and London by J. B. Lippincott, as a special "Gift Edition," circa 1920. It features 14 full color plates by illustrator Maria Kirk and numerous border and chapter decorations throughout the book. It is presented here in its original gray cloth boards, stamped in green and orange, with a beautiful illustrated cover label of Pinocchio in a forest. The book is protected by a new custom archival slipcase.
Collodi’s La Storia di un Burattino (trans: The Story of a Puppet) first appeared in serial form in the Italian weekly publication for children, Giornale per i bambini. The first installment was published on July 7, 1881 and continued for nearly four months and 15 chapters. Following the mischievous adventures of an animated marionette named Pinocchio, the original series was written as an educational tale of warning to Italian children, stressing the importance of morality, responsibility, and obedience to one’s parents and authority. In the original, serialized version, the flawed and irresponsible Pinocchio is penalized and hanged for his numerous poor decisions and faults of character at the end of Chapter 15.
At the request of his editor and by the demand of his many readers, Collodi resumed his serialized story in February of 1882. In these later chapters, Chapters 16–36, the Fairy with Turquoise Hair rescues and revives Pinocchio and eventually transforms him into a real boy. Pinocchio acquires a deeper understanding of himself and his moral responsibilities, making the story more palatable for children. In February 1883, the story was published in Italy as a single book, illustrated by Enrico Mazzanti. It was a huge publishing success.
The Adventures of Pinocchio is the world's third most translated book, after the Bible and The Little Prince. Pinocchio was first translated into English by Mary Alice Murray in 1892, whose translation was added to the widely circulated Everyman's Library in 1911. The first US edition was published in 1901, translated and illustrated by Walter S. Cramp and Charles Copeland...

The Flag of the United States by Milo Milton Quaife, First Edition, 1942
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Quaife, Milo Milton. The Flag of the United States. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1942. First edition. Octavo. Rebound in ¼ leather and cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt embossed titles to the spine. Illustrated. Presented with a matching archival slipcase.
Presented is a first edition printing of The Flag of the United States by Milo Milton Quaife. The book was published in New York by Grosset & Dunlap in 1942. It is presented here rebound in ¼ leather and cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine, and a matching archival slipcase.
Quaife wrote The Flag of the United States in order to present “the true and authentic history of the United States.” Wading through the myths and stories surrounding the flag, he details the origins and evolution of the American flag, using careful research to determine fact from fiction. There are several chapters on the early flags of Spain, France, and Holland in America and Quaife traces the development of the American flag from its English predecessor. He articulates the twenty-nine word resolution of the Second Continental Congress that made the flag of the United States, then outlines the changes to the flag’s design made in 1795, 1818, and 1912. He has a chapter on Civil War flags, a chapter on flags of the Army, and several debunking the many myths surrounding the American flag.
This book was very well received upon its publication. “Quaife is entitled to a good deal of praise for having written a straightforward, and very readable, history of our flag” (Ralph W. Steen, Southwestern Historical Quarterly, 1943). “To read this history of our flag is to read the history of these United States, not only in the years when we became an infant nation, but also in those later years variously devoted to territorial expansion, extending our commerce, and fighting other wars.” (Ardelia Olden Koch, Wisconsin Magazine of History, 1943).
Milo Milton Quaife (1880–1959) was a historian and writer, born in Nashua, Iowa. He received his education at Grinnell College, the University of Missouri, and the University of Chicago. Quaife was a published historian of the Great Lakes region, the Mississippi River valley, the Gold Rush, and President Polk...

Presented is a first edition, second printing of The Flag of the United States: Your Flag and Mine by Harrison S. Kerrick. This book was published by The Champlin Printing Co. in Columbus, Ohio. The first edition, first printing of this title was issued in February of 1925; this second printing was issued in April of 1925.
This book is a culmination of lifelong passion and respect for the American flag by the author Harrison S. Kerrick. The book begins by detailing the acts of continental and national Congresses, presidential proclamations, and Executive Orders that established the United States flag and Great Seal. He discusses the state laws pertaining to the American flag and argues the importance of a national flag code. Kerrick delves into the past history of flag design, including which European flags were popular in the early colonies, the early banners of the colonies, and the design elements that make up the stars and stripes as we know it today. He spends two chapters covering the facts and fictional myths surrounding our national flag. He then details how best to use the flag for personal and public use, inclduding how to create a flag, care for a flag, and the codes of conduct surrounding the proper display of the flag.
Lieutenant colonel Harrison Summers Kerrick (1873 – 1939) was an United States Army officer, teacher, and author. Kerrick was born in 1873 in Bloomington, Illinois, and attended Illinois Wesleyan University. In 1898, he enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving in the Spanish–American War, during which he was promoted to captain. He served as a field artillery officer in the Philippine–American War and in WWI, he served in the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps from December 1917 to February 1918.
A lecturer and teacher, Kerrick was also the author of two books, Military and Naval America and The Flag of the United States. Passionate about American history and the symbolism of the American flag, Kerrick created the code of conduct on the proper handling and display of the United States flag, which was later adopted by the United States Congress...

1955 "Quaternary: Ice-Age Landscape" Woolly Mammoth Vintage Wall Hanging
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original, hanging wall chart from the 1955 “History of Life on Earth” series by Austrian paleontologist Erich Thenius and illustrator Fritz Zerritsch. The series consists of ten paintings that show the progression and evolution of mammals, invertebrates, and plants over time. This specific scene is the tenth and final composition. Titled “Quartär Eiszeit-Landschaft” (translated: Quaternary - Ice-age landscape)” the composition features two woolly mammoths walking single file across a snowy, boulder strewn landscape. A herd of caribou is in the background. Small inset illustrations in the lower margins included a numbered key to the animals, plants, and fossils from that time period.
“The History of the Life on Earth” suite series was first conceived as a way to illustrate University of Vienna paleontologist Erich Thenius’ 1955 book “Die Geschicte des Lebens auf der Erde.” Thenius chose the Viennese landscape artist Fritz Zerritsch to produce the illustrations for this book. Resulting in a final completed suite of ten paintings, the suite “represented biotas and ecosystems present in different geologic time.” Starting with the Early Paleozoic period and ending with the Quaternary period, the scenes range from landscapes to underwater marine scenes. Stylistically, Thenius and Zerritsch drew inspiration from well known paleoartists Rudolph Ballinger and Charles R. Knight.
Black and white versions of Zerritsch’s original paintings were included in the back of the book and were referenced throughout the text. The paintings were also mass produced as classroom teaching aids in the form of roll-up wall charts, as seen here. In German-speaking countries, both the book and the hanging wall charts were marketed together. The wall charts were printed by Hofmanndruck Wein, a Viennese printing company. In the United States, the wall chart series was distributed by Denoyer-Geppert Co., an American company specializing in maps, atlases...

1856 U.S. Coast Survey Map of Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is U.S. Coast Survey nautical chart or maritime map of Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay from 1856. The map depicts the region from Susquehanna, Maryland to the northern Outer Banks in North Carolina. It also shows from Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia to the Atlantic Ocean. The map is highly detailed with many cities and towns labeled throughout. Rivers, inlets, and bays are also labeled. Various charts illustrating more specific parts of the region are marked on the map using dotted lines. The lines form boxes, and the corresponding chart number and publication date are given. Extensive triangulation surveys were conducted the length of Chesapeake Bay and are illustrated here. Hampton Roads, Virginia is labeled, along with the James, York, and Rappahannock Rivers, which were all extensively surveyed.
The chart was published under the supervision of A. D. Bache, one of the most influential and prolific figures in the early history of the U.S. Coast Survey, for the 1856 Report of the Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was an American physicist, scientist, and surveyor. Bache served as the Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey from 1843 to 1865. Born in Philadelphia, Bache toured Europe and composed an important treatise on European Education. He also served as president of Philadelphia's Central High School and was a professor of natural history and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon the death of Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler, Bache was appointed Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey.

"U.S. Flag Behind Capitol" by Ron Sloan, Mixed Media Painting, 1985
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is “U.S. Flag Behind Capitol,” an original mixed-media painting by American artist Ron Sloan. The drawing shows an intricately detailed rendering of the front entrance to the United States Capitol building. Behind the Capitol is a large, waving American flag, set outside an orange-hued rounded rectangle. Sloan created this stunning artwork in February of 1985, for use on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 22 cent “Flag Over Capitol” stamp, issued in March of that same year.
The painting depicts the iconic neoclassical building from the east orientation, with it’s dome towering overhead. Plans began in May of 1854 to build a new cast-iron dome for the United States Capitol. The then-architect of the Capitol Thomas Walter and his team were sold on the aesthetics of a new dome, as well as the utility of a fire-proof one. A year later, on March 3, 1855, President Franklin Pierce signed off on the appropriation of $100,000 to build the dome. Construction began in September of that year with the removal of the first dome raised by Charles Bulfinch. Over the next 11 years, the dome rose over the nation's capital.
By December of 1863, Walter was able to set the bronze sculpture “Statue of Freedom” atop the dome. Thomas Walter resigned in 1865 and his replacement, Edward Clark, assumed the role of finishing the last aspects of the dome. Just over a month later, in January 1866, Constantino Brumidi, who had been hired to paint a fresco above the interior dome's oculus, removed the scaffolding used...
