Antique Khmer Bird Shaped Ceramic Lime Pot

About the Item

Khmer Ceramic Lime Pot. A squat globular stoneware jarlet in the form of a bird covered in a thick dark brown glaze stopping short of the elevated string cut foot displaying the beige biscuit, a large owl’s beak and protruding eyes in relief on the shoulder and pinched relief suggesting tail feathers on the opposing side, incised concentric rings around the mouth and vertical lines on the body. Condition: Tail feathers and base chipped, one glaze scratch across the body, filled with slaked lime, in otherwise good condition. 2.5 inches high x 3.5 inches in diameter (6.4 x 8.9cm). 10.4 oz. Vietnamese Three-colour Ware Ceramic Lime Pot, Chu Dao Kiln, 17th century. Created for slaked lime, a component for the social practice of chewing “Betelnut”, globular form resembling an areca nut with round aperture at the shoulder and decorative overhead handle stylized in such a way that it could be interpreted as a dragon with tablets with four legs and feet adhering to the shoulder or a stem branch with tendrils terminating in raised short spikes and molded oblong shapes resembling bunches of areca nut, all covered in a crackled transparent glaze with copper green on the handle, sturdy foot rim decorated by a band of iron oxide brown where the body meets the foot, the base is unglazed. Lime residue, otherwise excellent condition. 6-1/4 in. high x 4 in. in diameter. (159 x 101mm) 2 lbs. (900g.) 17th century.
