Large Pre-Khmer Pottery Pouring Vessel, Kendi, 6th - 8th Century, Cambodia

About the Item

A large and attractive pre-Khmer red pottery kendi, pouring vessel, 6th - 8th century, Cambodia. The large vessel crafted of a red pottery, with a wide, globular body resting on a narrow, round, flat bottomed foot. A short, tapering neck rises from the body, opening to a wide, everted mouth with a slightly raised mouth rim. A single spout emerges from the shoulder of the body. The kendi is apparently undecorated, though there is a narrow incised band circumscribing the body at the shoulder. The body also has an attractive and subtle pattern from root marks and soil encrustations from centuries of burial. Kendi are pouring vessels with a spout but no handle. They are grasped around the neck and supported from the bottom when in use. The form originates in India, and was transported along trade and pilgrimage routes into Southeast and East Asia. They are used in both religious and secular contexts.
