About the Item

A wonderful Japanese woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando Hiroshige) (1797-1858) titled "Kinryuzan Temple, Asakusa" was initially conceived in 1856. It is one of his most coveted and most recognized images and features the great lantern at the entrance gate to the town courtyard where villagers gather to celebrate the winter season. The print appears signed and sealed by Hiroshige who is universally considered Japan's finest ukiyo-e artist and the last great master of the tradition, and exhibits a wonderful composition, rich, beautiful colors, and features tiny embossed impressions representing the gathering snow. This is likely a later printing of the original work done in the mid-19th century. From an impressive collection of Japanese artworks and prints (of which we will be listing other prints). Hiroshige's work can be found in numerous collections and museums including: The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston The Honolulu Museum of Art, Hawaii The Harvard Art Museum, Boston The British Museum, London UK Chazen Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin-Madison The Waseda University Theatre Museum The Edo Tokyo Museum, Japan The print was acquired in Kyoto, Japan in the 1950s/60s at The Red Lantern Shop which specialized in authentic and original Japanese prints and art (Please see the last image which was on the verso of the other Hiroshige print we are listing but clearly notes this print as well). Would be a great addition to any collectors of Hiroshige's work or fine Japanese prints/ art or eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting. Dimensions: 14.5" High, 9.5" Wide
