Utagawa Kuniyoshi Signed Japanese Woodblock Print Saigyo-Hoshi (The Monk Saigyo)

About the Item

A beautiful image by renowned Japanese artist/printmaker Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861 ) titled "Saigyo-Hoshi (no. 86) 西行法師 (The Monk Saigyo) (The Monk Saigyo)" from his famous series "Series: Hyakunin isshu no uchi 百人一首之内 (One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets)." This work features the Buddhist monk Saigyo under a radiant blue willow tree on a river bank showing a group of curious children a golden cat. The print has all of Kuniyoshi's signatures and seals. The image can be found in the British Museum in London, The Harvard Art Museum in Boston, The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston, and The Honolulu Museum of Art in Hawaii. Kuniyoshi was born in Edo in 1797 and is universally considered one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. Kuniyoshi's subjects covered many genres including landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals.
