Japanese Bamboo Basket Ikebana by Abe Motoshi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese Ikebana bamboo basket woven by artist Abe Motoshi (Japanese, b. 1942). Constructed with lacquered reddish Madake bamboo and rattan with technique of open and irregular twinning, the basket features an organic form with undulating woven surface with wavy crossing lines. The basket appears simple and refined, but the making process is deceivingly sophisticated. Clean and precise, it is of the signature style of Abe Motoshi's. The basket is signed on the base. It comes with the original tomobako storage box with inscription of the title on the lid as well as the artist's name and seal under the lead. A yellow wrapping cloth and a printout of the artist's biography from Tai Modern...

Large Contemporary Japanese Woven Bamboo Sculpture Mimura Chikuho
By Mimura Chikuho
Located in Atlanta, GA
A contemporary hand-woven bamboo sculpture in an organic form by Japanese bamboo artist Mimura Chikuho (1973-). Named "Cloud on the Peak", the piece was made as one of his series in 2004. Entirely hand-woven in irregular plaiting, the artist challenged the traditional bamboo basket making and elevated it into modern abstract sculpture. The minimalist donut form resembles the hat-shaped cloud formed around the peak of the mountain (often seen on Fujisan in Japanese art). It displays a wonderful subtle undulation and irregularity in its organic shape, achieved by a mastery of the traditional technique. The irregular plaiting appears chaotic in its busy crossing patterns yet as a whole, the piece strangely quiet and introverted, demanding contemplation from the viewer. Signed "Chikuho" underneath in Kanji. The piece comes with its original storage paper box and a silk bag. Provenance: Purchased from Tai Gallery/Textile Arts now (Tai Modern) in Santa Fe. Mimura Chikuho was born in 1973 in Tokyo. He studied under Yufu Shohaku...

Antique Chinese Table Gong Held Up by Two Hand Carved Wooden Monkey Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare and striking (no pun intended) Chinese bronze or brass gong with etched dragons. This hand-crafted and sizeable Chinese table gong from the turn of the century (circa 1900) is both practical to use and a beautiful work of art to look at. The gong itself is wonderfully decorated with an etched and engraved dragon scene and two Chinese symbols that we cannot read. With dragons representing good luck, strength and good health you can imagine why these famous symbols are often integrated in Chinese works of art. The monkey is the ninth of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. Many Chinese try to give birth in a year of the Monkey, as they believe that this will make their babies clever. In China saying, "Your kid is like a monkey," is actually perceived as praise. Well, here we have two perfectly hand-carved and relatively tall ones holding up a striking gong. One of them is holding up a small gong...
