Rare Japanese antique wooden god statue /12th century/small wabi-sabi figurines
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
I was able to obtain a very rare item. This is a sculpture of the god ``Shinzo''. "Shin" = God "zo" = statue Since ancient times in Japan, it has been believed that gods reside in all things in the universe, and there have been many shrines. In the 6th century, Buddhism was introduced and gradually spread throughout Japan. Around the 8th century, the idea that gods follow the teachings of Buddha spread. Until the Edo period, God and Buddha became one and the idea of ``Shinto and Buddhism syncretism'' was established. This statue was created during such a history. Originally, the image of God was invisible and could not be understood as something tangible. However, with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, idol worship was also introduced, and the idea that the gods follow the teachings of Buddha was also propagated at the same time in order to spread the teachings of Buddhism. Around that time, around the 9th century, the first statues of gods...

'Three Friends Of Winter' Motif Jar, C 1725, Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng Era
Located in seoul, KR
"Three Friends of Winter" motif: pine (song), bamboo (zhu), and plum (prunus or mei), which are known for their ability to thrive during the winter months. The pine and plum blossom in cold conditions, while the bamboo remains upright under the weight of snow, collectively representing steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. This motif became a popular auspicious design by the 17th century, not only in ceramics but also in wood carvings and paintings of the period. An example of this motif can be seen in a saucer-dish from the Qing dynasty, specifically from the Qianlong period (1736-1795). The dish features the "Three Friends of Winter" in underglaze cobalt blue, centered within a medallion. This design reflects a combination of aesthetic beauty and symbolic meaning, illustrating the high level of craftsmanship and cultural significance embodied in Qing dynasty ceramics...

Ancient Roman Intaglio from 1st-2nd Century AD Carved Carnelian Stone
Located in Chicago, IL
Ancient Roman Carnelian Intaglio. An intaglio is defined as a small Gemstone, generally semi-precious, that has been carved with images or inscriptions only on the face. This style of carving is the opposite of the cameo technique. The engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art form in the ancient world and an important one in some later periods. This particular Intaglio is Carnelian and dates from the second century AD and shows the head of a figure in profile. It is in very nice original condition and would be ideal for making into a ring. The word Intaglio comes from the Italian word intagliare, meaning “to engrave” or “cut into.” Intaglio describes the process in which an image is engraved into a stone, creating an image in the negative. When a stone carved in this way is pressed into hot wax...
